the squad will travel to Terre
Haute, Ind., to compete at
the Sycamore Invitational.
The UW harriers look to build
off of their performance last
weekend at the Badger Opener, in which Wisconsin finished second behind Big Ten
rival Northwestern.
"Our goal last week was to
keep the group together," UW
head coach Jim Stintzi said.
"I was pleased with the performance. I
think we will learn a bit more this weekend."
The Badgers will compete five runners that didn't compete at the opening
meet in Terre Haute, along with other
runners that look to earn a spot on the
travel squad. The rest of the runners will
compete in Whitewater, which gives all
the athletes valuable racing experience.
"Training is one thing, but racing is a
completely different thing," Stintzi said.
"One of the reasons why I like to split up
the squad is it puts a little bit of pressure
on the team if we are racing five or seven
people as opposed to 15."
Stintzi hopes that having the split
squad will help the team be ready for
pressure situations at the Big Ten championship and the Great Lakes Regional.
"You need to come through for the
team," Stintzi said. "I think its a good
thing to see who will be able to come
through when the pressure is on."
The race in Terre Haute will give UW
a chance to get its feet wet on the same
course that will host the NCAA championships in November.
"We want the entire group going to Indiana to get a chance on the course and
experience the way it runs," Stintzi said.
"It is a deceptively difficult course with a
downhill start with some rolling hills in
the middle. It will be a good chance for
our kids."
