INSIDE MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY BY AJ HARRISON @BADGER_TRACK SCHEDULE LAST WEEK Sept. 6 Badger Opener COMING UP Sept. 14 Sycamore Invitational 1st 10:15 a.m. Sept. 27 Coast-To-Coast 2:30 p.m. Battle Down memory lane: UW heads back to Terre Haute Badgers return to site of 2011 NCAA title win he last time Wisconsin traveled to Terre Haute, Ind., it returned to Madison with the 2011 NCAA Championship trophy in tow. With the NCAA championship back in Terre Haute this year, the Badgers will compete there this weekend at the Sycamore Invitational looking to get a feel for the challenging course. T 56 // VARSITY September 12, 2013 "It will be a trip back down memory lane to a course that I love in Terre Haute," UW head coach Mick Byrne said. "The reason we are going is that our young team needs to race, needs to get comfortable running on the grass and to get familiar with the course. "Familiarity is a good thing in our sport. We're going there with a different team than 2011." This weekend's 8-kilometer race will have a different feel than the NCAA championship, as UW is one of just three teams competing in the Sycamore Invitational. "You have to put every meet in its proper place," Byrne said. "For us in early September, it is exactly what we want it to be for this group. In addition, the Badgers will have the opportunity to test out the 10K course, the same one that will be used for the NCAA meet, on Friday. "I think every time you run in Terre Haute, you learn something different," Byrne said. "I think it is important for us to see the 10K course, as there are some long pulls on the course that are deceptive." UW STARTS SEASON ON HIGH NOTE ● Wisconsin won the Badger Opener in convincing fashion, as the quartet of Jacob Erschen, Malachy Schrobilgen, Jacob Naylor and Neal Berman crossed the line with identical 6K times of 18 minutes, 18 seconds to take the top four spots. The team battled hot and humid conditions during the race, which affected the Badgers' strategy. "After a mile into the race, I put the reins on them and told them to keep it together," Byrne said. "I think it was a smart decision. We had no issues coming off the race, and no issues when we trained on Saturday and Sunday."
