BADGERING
MALACHY SCHROBILGEN
Redshirt freshman Malachy Schrobilgen had an experience of a lifetime last March
competing for the United States at the 2013 IAAF World Junior Cross Country
Championship after taking home runner-up honors at the 2013 USA Junior Cross
Country Championship to earn his Team USA spot. With his experience competing
at the national and international level, Schrobilgen is expected to contribute as
the No. 7-ranked Badgers seek a 15th-consecutive Big Ten title this season.
"I think it definitely gives me a boost. It made me see what I was capable of. I gained some confidence running against some of the guys and
got to see where I stack up against them. It made me determined
to take my training to the next level and work on getting better
for this year. We have a lot of challenges ahead, but I'm determined to go after them and achieve them."
How do you think your world championship experience will help you?
"I'm just excited to step in and help fill some of the big
shoes that were left by Mo (Ahmed), Reed (Connor)
and Maverick (Darling) and go after that 15th Big
Ten title in a row."
What are you excited for most this season?
How was the team's training camp in
Door County last month?
"It was a good trip. I think we had a lot of guys
step in into the new captain roles. Some of
the older guys got to know the newer guys
a lot better. We got to know Gavin (new assistant coach Gavin Kennedy) a lot better.
We came together as a group in a short
amount of time. I think we are moving
in the right direction. It was really
relaxing, we got a lot of training in,
and just really enjoyed each other's
company up there."
"I went to the Bonnaroo music festival
in Tennessee, which was a blast. I also
worked the Wisconsin cross country
camp (Camp of Champions), which
gave me the chance to work with a lot
of high school athletes. I attended the
camp when I was in high school, so it was
nice to be on the other side working with
kids that have the same dream that I had."
