FIRST FEMALE TO JOIN ICE HOCKEY CLUB TEAM At only fi ve foot, three inches, Ann Marie Stefaney '15, a baking & pastry student, is the fi rst female player on the club hockey team. She also happens to be hard of hearing. Stefaney is 85 percent deaf in one ear and 40 percent in her other ear. Complications at birth and then a staph infection forced her to give up her military dreams. So she baked while she slowly recovered, and then enrolled at JWU. "My mother had me in fi gure skating," Stefaney says. "I cried during my skating lesson, so my father walked onto the ice and I pointed to the other rink where my brother's team was practicing and said, 'I want to do that!'" Despite the constant ringing in her ears, she is determined to persevere. It was well into the season before her coach knew of her hearing impairment. It just was not an issue — on the ice or as she masters her souffl és with her classmates. A CLOSER LOOK AT CAMPUS DINING Big changes have been taking place at the Student Dining Center. An exciting new feature is the Little Campus Cart which off ers snacks and lunch combos. Its convenient location in the Academic Center Courtyard has proven to be a huge hit among students, faculty and staff . The fall term also marked the transition to a new executive chef. Adam Cochran will oversee the Charlotte Campus' catering and resident dining culinary operations, serving over 1,000 meals per day and supervising more than 40 Compass associates and JWU internship students. "In my fi rst weeks at JWU, I felt that my biggest challenge was crafting menus that kept students engaged and happy," says Cochran. "My focus is balancing the menu to increase variety and add healthier options. We have a good group of young culinarians working in the Student Dining Center. It is my pleasure to guide them in the right direction." Some new menu items featured at the dining center include Mac Mondays (macaroni and cheese on Mondays) and Wildcat Wednesdays (wings and discounts for JWU families). CAMPUS NEWS charlotte
