FEATURE EXPERIENTIAL EDUCATION AWARD JWU RECEIVES PRESTIGIOUS BURKE AWARD Johnson & Wales University was selected as the recipient of the 2014 William M. Burke Presidential Award for Excellence in Experiential Education. This prestigious award was presented by the National Society for Experiential Education (NSEE) and funded by The Washington Center for Academic Internships and Seminars in memory of its founder William M. Burke. The Burke Award also provides a $2,000 scholarship to a deserving JWU student who is involved in experiential learning. Chancellor John J. Bowen accepted the award at the 2014 NSEE Conference held in Baltimore, Md., on behalf of the university. "There is no doubt that I share Bill Burke's passion for the power and value of experiential education," said Bowen during his acceptance speech. "I have dedicated most of my professional life to finding ways to give students the chance to apply classroom theories in a real-world setting. But none of that passion would have been realized had it not been for the support, encouragement and vision of my colleagues at Johnson & Wales University." Johnson & Wales has a long history of providing its students with experiential learning. "The university was bestowed this honor in recognition of our significant contributions to experiential education and our commitment to students through program enrichment in experiential and work-integrated learning," says Maureen Dumas, vice president of Experiential Education & Career Services.
