HEALTH & WELLNESS FAIR ATTRACTS HUNDREDS
More than 350 students, staff and faculty attended the Health
& Wellness Fair this fall. Ten JWU organizations and committees
were joined by 34 outside vendors, including the American Heart
Association, Freshpoint Connecticut, Farm Fresh R.I., Melanoma
Foundation of New England, and the Roger Williams Medical Center
for the event.
"Athletics, Campus Dining, Campus Safety & Security, Counseling,
Health Education, Health Services, Residential Life, and Student
Involvement & Leadership were all part of the planning process,"
says Tarah Warner '09, FMP, nutritional analyst. "Our goal is to make
this an annual event, and plans are already underway for next year."
Activities included a self-defense demonstration by the Mixed
Martial Arts Club, a smoothie sampling by the JWU Nutrition
Society, and a workout with Debbie Becker from Residential Life.
The JWU Health & Wellness Committee conducted a survey at the
event to see if students, faculty and staff support a tobacco-free
campus policy. With a total of
195 participants, 88 percent
indicated that they would
be in favor of this policy
change. This information
will support further research
into developing a proposal
regarding tobacco on campus.
The newest symbol of JWU spirit, a 5,000-pound bronze Wildcat
sculpture, was dedicated on Sat., Oct. 18, during Family Weekend.
Hundreds of students, families, staff and faculty gathered in front of
the Wildcat Center on the Harborside Campus for the celebration.
More than a year in the making, this project will bring the JWU
community together like never before.
