STUDENT RELIEF: In 2013, Chancellor John J. Bowen '77 and First Lady Kathleen Harney es- tablished the Chancellor's Student Relief Fund to provide students with financial support when they face unanticipated financial expenses due to difficult circumstances. "Ensuring that JWU students can stay in school to finish their studies is an important priority for the university," notes Chancellor Bowen. Full- time undergraduate students enrolled at JWU and in good academic standing can apply for reimbursement for expenses incurred because of an emergency. A Fund Approval Committee has been established to review applications received online and to interview students seeking support from the fund. Awards to students are considered gifts and documented in tax forms at the end of the year. The fund is meant to be sustainable and students who have benefitted from it during their under- graduate years are encouraged to make a dona- tion to it when their circumstances improve. FRIENDS GIVING IN CELEBRATION: Innova- tive. Pioneering. Virtuous. Ambitious. Visionary. Transformative. These are the adjectives applied to Johnson & Wales University by its leaders and enthusiasts to describe a university that has combined industry-focused curricula and ties to employers with individualized career roadmaps for students. To celebrate a century of accomplishment, Conair founder and JWU champion Lee Rizzuto launched a project to raise scholarship funds from friends and acquaintances around the world. Chancellor John J. Bowen '77 and a number of university colleagues joined Rizzuto in the fundraising efforts, resulting in more than 150 individu- als and organizations contributing $350,000 for scholarships. This total includes an endowed scholarship fund established by former Campbell Soup Company executive and JWU honorary degree recipient R. Gordon MacGovern in honor of the university's 100th anniversary. Their generosity is celebrated in a publication, "JWU at 100: Friends Giving in Celebration." The scholarship funds are already being distributed across the JWU campuses to eligible students in all areas of study. J W U S U P P O R T YEAR IN REVIEW
