HONORING THE CODE: All too often, honesty, accountability and courtesy seem to be falling by our society's wayside these days. But JWU students have taken it upon themselves to change that by promising to adhere to a collaborative Honor Code while a member of the campus community. Developed by students from all four campuses, and first unveiled and distributed at 2013's Con- vocation, the Honor Code focuses on not only academic expectations, but also (and arguably more importantly) on interpersonal respect. It is embedded in JWU's culture: read and distrib- uted at Fall Convocations and integrated into classrooms, student activities, athletic events and even decor. "We all commit to following the Honor Code," says Ronald Martel, vice president of student affairs. "The code brings a sense of pride and consistency in integrity, ethics and academic performance, and standardizes expectations across campuses. We're proud of our students, and with this Honor Code, we will become an even stronger community." "Whether on or off campus, our promise as Johnson & Wales students — as Wildcats — is to maintain our commitment to the Honor Code," says Elena Melekos '16, student government president. "Being respectful and responsible is what makes us well-rounded individuals and valuable members of the greater community." FLOODING THE COMMUNITY WITH KINDNESS: Historic floods through- out Colorado canceled classes and events for students at the Denver Campus last fall, and devastated surrounding communities. Neighbor- hoods lost lives and the region suf- fered unfathomable damage. Fifteen JWU students answered the community's cry for help and volun- teered 45 hours at Bluff Lake Nature Center, an open space located a few miles northeast of campus. Wildcat Interest Groups for Incoming Students (WIGIS), a committee which focuses on leadership and civility, helped organize this volunteer opportunity. JWU students cleared garbage and broken tree branches, recycled what they could, and uncovered buried paths and trails. S T U D E N T L I F E YEAR IN REVIEW
