INSIDE MEN'S HOCKEY BY PAUL CAPOBIANCO 'We talkin' about practice' Badgers getting a lot of it early this season n college hockey, the six schools from the Ivy League, who belong to the ECAC in the sport, are always the last to open the season. This year, two weeks after most other schools made their season debuts, the Ivy League began official games. If you look at the game totals early in the season, Wisconsin might be considered the "Harvard of the Midwest" (maybe the "Cornell of the Midwest" because of the school colors ― UW has beaten both in NCAA title runs). The Badgers have skated in six games so far, the same amount of games as the Ivy League schools. Only two I 62 // VARSITY November 14, 2013 schools in the country ― American International and Connecticut ― have played in fewer games. The Badgers return to action this weekend after playing just two games since Oct. 19. Eighth-ranked Miami is the challenge as UW makes its first-ever visit to Oxford, Ohio. UW and Miami met last season at the Kohl Center, splitting a pair of low-scoring affairs (1-0 for UW; 2-1 for Miami). The Badgers will take another weekend off next week before Wisconsin enters a more consistent schedule for the rest of the season. It has also allowed junior goaltender Joel Rumpel ample time to heal an injured leg that has forced him to miss four of the team's first six contests. OFFENSIVE LEADERS ● There is a small sample size, but the team's offensive numbers are comparitively outstanding. UW's offense ranks ninth in the country (3.83 goals per game), its defense is the nation's top-scoring blue line group on average (3.33 points per game), while its senior class is the nation's fifth highest-scoring group (5.17 points per game). UW's power play also ranks 12th (24.0 percent).
