UNIVERSITY JOURNAL 2019-20 THEATRE AND DANCE SEASON ANNOUNCED The Department of Theatre Arts next season, “A 50th Anniversary: Inquiry, Discovery, Celebration,” selections were chosen as a means to reflect on themes of identity. First up is the contemporary musical comedy First Date, which follows two young people through an evening as they embark on a blind date. Next will be Pride and Prejudice, a vibrant new adaptation of Jane Austen’s 1813 romance. Finishing out the fall semester will be Discovering Me: The Fall Dance Concert, which will focus on the identity of self and the exploration of one’s own values. Long-time fans of the theatre will be excited to attend the spring musical, Fiddler on the Roof, chosen as a classic community favorite for the 50th anniversary season. In April, the department will present the contemporary play, The Wolves, which follows a girls indoor soccer team as it navigates big questions and wages tiny battles as only adolescent warriors can. The season will end with the follow-up to the fall dance concert, Celebrating We: The Spring Dance Concert. The concert will focus on celebrating community, our collective identity and shared values. Additional offerings will include Morning Noon Evening Night, an environmental performance, which will have just returned from a performance at the Prague Quadrennial; Jacob Marley’s Christmas Carol, a one-man retelling of the familiar story; three Bravo Cabaret performances; and two student-directed plays. THE DASH IS OFF AND RUNNING The Dash is a local shuttle and partnership between Colorado Mesa University, Downtown Grand Junction, Horizon Business Improvement District, Grand Junction Regional Airport, Grand Valley Transit and The City of Grand Junction. The new site includes many upgrades and new equipment to better prepare students for their careers. There is more storage space for vehicles and equipment, and the facility includes updated audio visual (AV) and instructional technology capabilities, as well as larger classrooms. The facility includes an outdoor space where students will learn how to operate bucket and digger-derrick vehicles and climb industry-height poles. “We are providing students the opportunity to learn in a new, state-ofthe-art facility,” said Brigitte Sundermann, vice president of community college affairs. “This project is the result of several years of planning and collaboration with our industry partners.”
