UNIVERSITY JOURNAL RECORD-SETTING SPRING SEASON Student-athletes continued a string of strong performances with another banner spring season. A national champion, a region champion team, three first-year head coaches leading their programs to the postseason and academic achievements are just a few of the highlights from the 2019 spring season. The Track and Field Team crowned their third national champion in program history as redshirt freshman Ethan Harris won the national championship in the high jump in Kingsville, Texas, last May. Harris entered the competition in a tie for 11th but had a school-record setting jump of 2.20 meters (7 feet, 2 ½ inches) to claim the title. The CMU Baseball Team won the RMAC regular season championship, the RMAC Tournament and the South Central Super Regional this season. With the regional win, they made their fourth appearance in the NCAA National Championships and entered the tournament as the No. 1 seed. They fell 3-1 in the national championship game to the Tampa Spartans. The Women’s Lacrosse Team set program records of their own under first-year coach Shanta Loecker. Loecker led the Mavericks to their first-ever appearance in the NCAA National Tournament — setting program records for wins including a win over Lindenwood University in the National Tournament. Scott Sullivan led the Men’s Golf Team to the NCAA Super Region Tournament in his first season as the head coach. The former softball assistant coach Erik Kozel took over the reins of the Maverick softball program in the fall and didn’t miss a beat, leading the program to their fourth consecutive RMAC Tournament and fourth straight appearance in the NCAA Tournament. CMU student-athletes also performed in the classroom. Five programs had student-athletes earn the RMAC Summit Award, which is given to the student with the highest GPA at the championship tournament. Mavericks had an athletic department record at 204 all-academic team recipients for the 2018-19 academic year.
