MEN'S GOLF BY TAM FLARUP Burcin will welcome plenty of fresh faces Loss of four seniors leads to new-look squad W ith the graduation of four seniors and the influx of three incoming freshmen plus a junior transfer, the face of the Wisconsin men's golf program will be quite different when play resumes in the fall. "I think we have hit an interesting point in the program," Badgers coach Mi62 ยป VARSITY JUN E 20, 2013 chael Burcin said. "We are two years in, and our first full recruiting class begins in September. "Our first group of guys graduated this past May, we have a new indoor practice facility and we had our golf course restoration completed." UW welcomes the No. 1 @BadgerMGolf player in Wisconsin in Ben Skogen of Onalaska, the No. 1 player in South Carolina in Richard Hubbard of Daniel Island, and one of the top eight players in Illinois in Tommy Schofield of Mundelein. In addition, redshirt junior Jack Watson, who sat out last year after transferring from Kent State, will take his first swings as a Badger. The new players will join a veteran group which includes three-year letterwinner Rob Jacobsen, twoyear letterwinners Zach Balit, Eric Schremp, Thomas O'Bryan and John Gullberg, and first-time year letterwinner Matt Ross. "The three guys that transferred into our program in Zach, John and Jack all came from very successful programs in South Carolina, Illinois, and Kent State, respectively," Burcin said. "Our three incoming freshmen have been successful on a national level. We're enjoying a steady stream of these types of players that will continue our momentum. I am unbelievably excited to get started in September." The team will enjoy the first season of restored greens at University Ridge Golf Course as well as the new, state-of-the-art indoor practice facility, which opened in November at University Ridge. The Badgers will also host their first home competition at University Ridge since hosting the 2005 Big Ten Championship when they play host to the Badger Invitational Sept. 2930.
