world championship trials in Indianapolis (June 25-29). "Ivy came into my office this spring and said, 'I want to make the U.S. National Team,''' Hite said. "It's always encouraging when someone comes in with big goals and is thinking along those lines. "We always want to have our swimmers do very well at NCAAs and score as many points as they can for Wisconsin. But you're always hoping that they have Olympic dreams.'' Making a national team would be the first step on that path. "That's my goal and I think it could happen at this meet,'' Martin said. "I'm really ex- "Ivy is a lot like a cheetah,'' Hite said. "She's not your typical alley cat. She runs white hot. That's her talent, just pure unadulterated speed.'' 38 » VARSITY JUN E 20, 2013 cited to see where I'm at.'' Does such an expectation add pressure? "It's nothing that I can't handle ― I think I can do it,'' said Martin. "Whitney knows what he's doing. He can get me there, so I'm not too worried about it.'' Martin credited Hite for her development, which saw her make a substantial jump between her freshman and sophomore years with the Badgers, not unlike teDuit's own jump over the same period. "He (Hite) has definitely pushed me harder than any coach ever has and he has made me believe in myself,'' she said. "He has coached a lot of amazing swimmers and I can trust him.'' Hite called Martin's progress from one year to the next "almost equally as impressive'' as what teDuits achieved. "She dropped almost a full second in the 50 free,'' he said. "That's unbelievable.'' Physically, Martin is anything but a bruiser, Hite observed. "Ivy is a lot like a cheetah,'' he said. "She's not your typical alley cat. She runs white hot. That's her talent, just pure unadulterated speed.'' Martin chuckled when reminded of Hite's analogy. "I really don't know if I can explain what he meant by that,'' she said. "I'm definitely a sprinter, I guess that's what a cheetah would be.'' What's next? Is there room for more improvement? How far can she take it? "There are things in training that I know that I can be better at,'' Martin said, "so I'm not putting any limit on it.'' Interjected Hite, "We're still working on her 100; hopefully that's what is next for her, developing her 100, as her 50 continues to get to the point where she's world class.'' Meanwhile, teDuits will test himself at the Indy trials against world-class backstrokers: Olympic gold medalist Tyler Clary, the 200 world record-holder; and Ryan Lochte, an 11-time Olympic medalist. "At worst, third is what I'm hoping for, but you never know,'' said teDuits. "Where I end up will kind of tell me where I am
