Dale Nees Former sub commander to head advising A former professor of naval science at Notre Dame who once commanded a nuclear attack submarine will become the new head of undergraduate advising in July 2012. Dale Nees will succeed Assistant Dean of Undergraduate Advising Samuel Gaglio, a fixture in the College for more than two decades who is retiring as of the same date. Nees served in the Department of Defense for more than 30 years, including a term (1995-98) as commander of the nuclear submarine USS Houston. As senior direc- tor of Undergraduate Studies, Nees is working alongside Gaglio during the transition. His many military postings include serving as director of Navy Appropriation Matters with the U.S. Congress and as senior aide to the Commander in Chief, Allied Forces Southern Europe in Naples, Italy. In that role, he was di- rectly involved with the U.N. humanitarian relief efforts in the former Yugoslavia Republic of Bosnia-Herzegovina. PWC eXplore Workshops recruit minority students to accounting The accountancy profession has long faced a diversity problem. According to one report, African Americans account for only 1 percent of all CPAs in the United States. The PricewaterhouseCoopers eXplore Workshops aim to attract more underrepresented-minority groups to the profession. More than 20 Notre Dame students have attended each of the inaugural annual workshops, where they hear about opportunities in accountancy. Thanks to the workshops and other recruitment efforts—including the universitywide Building Bridges program that matches minority students with faculty mentors—the number of minority accountancy majors at Notre Dame has been gradually rising. Technology- enabled sharing A 2010 remodel of a traditional classroom in the Mendoza College resulted in the Incite Lab, one of the most technologically advanced college learning spaces available.
