Undergraduate Program 'iPad class' attracts national attention Assistant Professor Corey Angst attracted attention from national media in 2010 when he experi- mented with teaching his "Project Management" course using an iPad tablet-style computer instead of a traditional textbook. The undergraduate students read assigned texts, took notes and watched videos on the devices. The experiment was part of a year- long study by Notre Dame called the eReader Project. The iPads were part of Angst's efforts to establish a "paperless" classroom. He also surveyed the students about the experience as part of a research project. Undergraduate research blossoming The volume of research conducted by Mendoza undergraduates has grown by more than 150 percent since 2008-09. During the most recent academic year (2010-11), there were 955 cases of students enrolling in research courses, serving as faculty research assistants, or conducting independent research projects. That compares with 381 during 2008-09. The newest organized undergraduate research opportunity involves John F. Sherry Jr., the Raymond W. & Kenneth G. Herrick Professor of Marketing and department chair. Sherry selects six to seven junior marketing majors to enroll in his Directed Readings Qualitative Marketing Research course in the spring. Then in the fall, he sets the team loose on a full-blown marketing research project. The first group to go through the process presented its research findings on the tailgating phenomenon at the fourth annual Notre Dame Undergraduate Scholars Conference, held May 6, 2011. The team represented the first business majors ever to present at the conference.
