39 I t's a step forward for the University of Iowa women's swimming and diving program with the Hawkeyes posting their highest Big Ten fin- ish since 2005. Iowa closed out the 2014 Big Ten Women's Swim- ming & Diving Championships in eighth place with 199 points on Feb. 22, two spots ahead of its 2013 showing. e point total is the second-most for the team since 2005 behind a 201-point output at the 2012 championships in Iowa City. Iowa rewrote the school record book during the four days of competition at the University Aquatic Center on the campus of the University of Min- nesota. e Hawkeyes swam to the top times in school history in eight events — four relays and four individual events. Iowa took down a pair relay records on the open- ing day of the championships, swimming to the top times in the 200-medley and 800-freestyle relays. e quartet of senior Lindsay Seemann, freshman Emma Sougstad and seniors Abby Tuch- scherer and Elise Borja posted a time of 1:40:12 in the 200-medley relay, before sophomore Olivia Kabacinski, junior Becky Stoughton, senior Emily Hovren and Seemann bettered the 800-free relay record by 2.5 seconds, finishing in 7:12.49. Kabacinski began the assault on the individual records in the 50-yard freestyle Feb. 20. e Indi- ana native broke her own school record when she touched out in 22.70 seconds during the morning preliminaries. Borja also posted a personal-best in the event, finishing with the second-fastest time in the UI record book in 22.96 seconds. Day three of the Big Ten Championships saw the top times in the 100-butterfly, 100-breaststroke and the 400-medley relay fall. Senior Haley Gor- don became the first UI swimmer to break the 55-second barrier in the 100-fly when she touched out in 54.58 before Sougstad followed with a pro- gram-best time in the 100-breaststroke in 1:00.90. Iowa took down the 400-medley relay time dur- ing the Feb. 21 finals when Seemann, Sougstad, Gordon and Kabacinski posted a time of 3:39.54 to finish seventh. e final two Hawkeye records went down during the final day of the champion- ships. Freshman Callie Head posted the top score in school history on the platform finishing with a five-dive score of 289.60. e eighth record went down during the final event of the week when Ka- bacinski, Borja, Hovren, and Seemann finished in 3:21.07 in the 400-freestyle relay. Iowa's solid showing at the Big Ten Champion- ships came on the heels of a dual season where the Hawkeyes finished with a 9-5 record. e nine wins rank as the second-most under UI head coach Marc Long and the second-most for the program since the 1984-95 season. ON THE HORIZON e UI men's swimming and diving team will compete at the 2014 Big Ten Men's Swimming and Diving Championships from Feb. 26 through March 1 in Ann Arbor, Mich. e four-day com- petition will be held at the Canhan Natatorium on the campus of the University of Michigan.
