37 A handful of random thoughts as the calen- dar turns and we begin the march to the madness of March: Twitter is an incredibly powerful communications tool. We use it effectively to tell the "Win. Gradu- ate. Do it Right." stories that are happening every day in the athletics department at the University of Iowa. Without questions, it has been an in- strument of much good. It has also been a tool of ignorance. e National Football Foundation announced in late February that it will be partnering with the Football Writers Association of America on a new weekly poll during the college football season. Does it hurt to have another list to review and debate? We'll see the "FWAA-NFF Grantland Rice Super 16" each Sunday through the fall with the last appearing on the day aer many of the nation's top conferences play their championship games. For the youngsters, here's a link to answer the question, "Who is Grantland Rice?" HERE. It seems there's always talk about night games and college football this time of the year. We all should be careful what we wish for because mid to late November can be unpredictable weather-wise. I also gave a nod to 2:30 p.m.(CT) kickoffs. Now we're learning of talk about Friday night college football: HERE. Preliminary research related to the Big Ten's fast-approaching discussions with their television partners, but the headline caught my attention and caught the attention of many fans of Big Ten football. Brunner, Hansen, Haluska, Horner, Henderson, ompson, Freeman, omas, Reed. ese are the names listed in the box score for the Iowa basketball team's most recent appearance in the By Rick Klatt NCAA Tournament — March 17, 2006. In a few weeks, that group is going to be replaced by this year's squad and how exciting is that? Iowa's Samantha Logic should not only be in the conversation as the Big Ten Conference player of the year in women's basketball, but the favorite. She's the only player in our league to average more than 14 points, six rebounds and seven assists a game, and is the only player in the history of the Big Ten to have three triple-doubles in one season — another reason you should be buying tickets to the upcoming first and second round games of the NCAA Women's Basketball Tournament that will be played at Carver in mid-March. You can buy your tickets online HERE. Late in February, the Big Ten released the list of opponents the league's men's and women's basket- ball teams will play next year, the first season to include Rutgers and Maryland. On the men's side, I was disappointed to see that Indiana wouldn't visit Mediacom Court for the second straight sea- son. Fran McCaffery's team does get to entertain Rutgers and Maryland in single-play games. On the women's side, I was hoping at least one of the two newcomers to our league would be coming to Iowa City because of the "local angle" — Ce- dar Rapidian Brenda Frese is the head coach at Maryland and C. Vivian Stringer, our former head coach, runs the show at Rutgers. Neither will be bringing their team to the Heartland. e Iowa baseball and soball teams are well into their championship seasons. So are Iowa's two golf teams, tennis teams, and track and field teams. It's now up to Mother Nature if we'll get the opportu- nity to watch any of these teams in competition in Iowa City.
