As they prepare to challenge for UW’s starting job, offensive coordinator Paul Chryst likes the demeanor and intelligence of quarterback tandem Jon Budmayr and Russell Wilson

hen it became apparent that former NC State quarterback Russell Wilson might be available to the Badgers if he left pro baseball, UW offensive coordinator Paul Chryst went to work. Or rather he did his homework. “The first thing I did was talk to Todd Rice to find out what kind of guy he is,” Chryst said. Rice is a friend and the director of strength and conditioning for the NC State football program. Both of his brothers are high school coaches in Wisconsin: Pat at Waunakee and Scott at Stevens Point.

The Rice family -- headed by former McFar- land coach Bill Rice, a WFCA Hall of Famer -- has some history with the Chryst family (Paul’s late dad, George, is also a WFCA Hall of Famer).
