T
here’s a saying that floats around Camp Randall Sta- dium this time of year, and it applies to more than just the football team’s preparations for the 2011 season. If you’re not getting better, you’re getting worse. The message is simple: Success is a moving target and you have to keep moving along with it if you’re going to keep up.
It’s directed at the 105 players that are grinding through the rigors of Fall Camp down in the north end of the sta- dium, but the idea trickles down to the south side and the offices of all the staff inside Kellner Hall. We — meaning the Athletic Communications staff — started this publication last December, just after football had hoisted its Big Ten championship trophy and with the men’s basketball and women’s hockey teams still in the early stages of seasons that would include deep postseason runs.
The idea was to give Badgers fans an innovative way to follow their teams and tell the compelling stories of the coaches and student-athletes we have the opportunity to get to know on a daily basis.
Thanks in large part to the addition
of veteran Madison journalist Mike Lucas to our team, we have been able to delve into those stories from a perspective that is as unique as the personalities we feature. A weekly digital magazine – especially one with the quantity and quality of content we believe is contained in Varsity — is something you won’t find coming from any other collegiate athletics program.
Still, if you’re not getting better, you’re getting worse — and we intend to get better as we kick off Volume 2 of “The Official Online Magazine of Wisconsin Athletics.” You’ve probably noticed the spruced-up design and the new page size. We’re also more mobile-friendly for reading on devices like iPhones and tablets. But the improvements are more than just cosmetic.
From more exclusive access to the first look at Matt Lepay’s popular “The Voice” column each week to more vid- eo content to first-hand insight from Barry Alvarez, expect more out of us. Consider it Varsity 2.0.
We’d love some feedback, so feel free to contact me with comments and suggestions at bm3@athletics.wisc.edu.
