TITLE IX SPOTLIGHT CELEBRATING 40 YEARS "Title IX was the key legislation that gave meaningful opportunities for women to participate in sports at the highest level. For all of us women who participated in sports long before it was widely accepted, Title IX gave vali- dation to women as serious athletes who enjoyed all the values of sports just like our male counterparts." Tam Flarup | Director of Website Services Iowa State golf, 1972-75 First full-time women's sports information director at Wisconsin 1977-2001 "I played on my boys' high school soccer team because there was not a girls' team at the time. My junior year in high school, my area added girls' high school soccer because of Title IX, which enabled me to earn a scholarship to the Uni- versity of Massachusetts. Penn State added women's soccer because of Title IX, giving me a job as an assistant coach, and providing me with a career influencing young women. Lastly, I was born in 1972, so I have been truly affected by Title IX." Paula Wilkins | Women's Soccer Head Coach University of Massachusetts soccer, 1991-94 "I can remember playing on our middle school basketball team in a whole different way than the way it is played today. We played in the converted cafeteria on a tile floor in Chuck Taylor hightops — not for the look, but because they were the only kind of shoe available and did offer some ankle support but no arches. Until college, I never could cross half court, I played in the 6-on-6 half-court game. We used the same ball as the guys, there was not women's ball. There was no such thing as a 3-point line. We always traveled by bus with the guys' team." Terry Gawlik | Associate Athletic Director Southwestern University basketball, 1977-81 "I don't think female athletes today realize how good they have it, thanks to the women who fought for equal funding in the 1970s. Even my abil- ity to compete in college athletes is thanks to those women. I don't think the athletes of today would understand 24-hour van rides to Florida for spring break or sharing the locker room in The Shell with the general public or getting one pair of shoes a year. It may not seem like much to the athletes of today, but I was grateful for all of it! " Diane Nordstrom | Assoc. Athletic Communications Director University of Wisconsin track and field, 1980-84 TITLE IX CELEBRATION Wednesday, Nov. 21 Volleyball vs. Minnesota, 7 p.m. UW Field House 20 » VARSITY NOVEMBER 15, 2012 Saturday, Nov. 24 Hockey vs. St. Cloud State, 2 p.m. LaBahn Arena Sunday, Nov. 25 Basketball vs. Evansville, 2 p.m. Kohl Center
