TEAM OUTLOOK The Cougars went undefeated in non-conference play, achieving a winning record for the first time in four years, and posted the most overall victories ince 2009. Washington State posted three wins over ranked opponents, evidence of the program's upward swing. With an impressive 11 letterwinners returning for another season, including then-freshman sensation Kyra Holt, WSU looks to build upon 2013 under head coach Jen Greeny, who enters in her fourth year in Pullman. STRENGTHS » For the second-straight year, the majority of Washington State's veterans return, including scoring leader sophomore Kyra Holt (pictured). Holt was the AVCA Pacific North Region Fresh- man of the Year, a first for the program, and also received Pac-12 All-Freshman honors, the first Cougar to earn that honor since 2003. » Also returning are seniors Ver'Leea Hardaway and Jaicee Harris, and sophomore Emmy Allen who were in the top four on the team in scoring behind Holt. The trio averaged 6.26 kills per set and 7.14 points per set combined. Harris and Holt were also big-time contributors defensively, with Harris recording 391 digs and Holt adding 307 of her own. » Junior libero Kate Sommer looks to reprise her starting libero position for the third-straight season. She led the team in digs with 495 and a 4.02 digs per set average last year, also tallying the third-most assists on the team with 209. » Despite a 5-15 Conference record last season, the Cougars had some big wins, including three upsets over ranked opponents, knocking off then-No. 4 USC, No. 16 Arizona State and No. 23 California over the course of the year, a sign of good things to come for WSU. CONCERNS » While WSU has done a good job of digging the ball, the defense at the net will need a big boost as the Cougars look to replace Marcelina Glab. Glab led the team in blocks with 131 total, 117 of which were block assists. No other player on the roster topped 100 total blocks last season. » Washington State also has big shoes to fill at the setting position with the departure of Camryn Irwin. The 2013 team co-captain tallied 1,067 assists on the year as the floor's primary director, giving her 3,390 career assists, the fourth-best total in program history. She split time with sophomore setter Haley MacDonald, who is the most probable replacement after recording 224 assists in her 46 set appearances last year.
