TEAM OUTLOOK The Sun Devils saw their second-consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance for the first time since 1999 and 2000, and their second-straight season with 19 or more wins for the first time since 1992 and 1993. After finishing 2013 with a tough five-set opening round loss to BYU in the postseason tournament, Arizona State returns nearly all of its top talent for 2014 in the hunt for a third-straight postseason appearance for the first time in head coach Jason Watson's tenure. STRENGTHS » All of Arizona State's attacking core returns for another season, led by junior Macey Gardner (pictured), who led the team in kills per set for the the second-straight year with a 4.56 average. Gardner is joined by senior Nora Tuioti-Mariner, juniors Whitney Follette and Mercedes Binns, and sophomores BreElle Bailey and McKenzie Willey. The six players were the team's top scorers for ASU last year, combining for 17.57 points per set and an attack percentage of .226. » The Sun Devils found their setter in junior Bianca Arellano, who averaged 10.67 assists per set, fourth best in the Conference. Arellano also contributed defensively with 298 digs, second-most on the squad. » Blocking is on the upslope for Arizona State as the Sun Devils averaged 2.25 blocks per set in 2013, better than the 2012 average of 2.12, led by Follette's 117 blocks. CONCERNS » The Sun Devils will miss Stephanie Preach, a team leader who was ASU's key libero who led the team in digs for the past three years. Preach's 4.70 digs per set was third in the Pac-12. No other defensive specialist on the 2014 roster logged any time for the Sun Devils at the libero position. » With so much returning talent, Arizona State will have to find space for other roster members to get some playing time to create depth. Outside of the starters, only five players saw action in more than half of ASU's 117 sets last season.
