Familiar matchup awaits
Badgers in NCAA quarters
UW meets Harvard after memorable '07 clash
W
hen you ask many
Badgers fans about
the most memora-
ble women's hockey they have
seen, one game stands out: the
2007 NCAA quarterfinal be-
tween Wisconsin and Harvard
at the Kohl Center.
The game started at 7:07
p.m. and ended at 11:42, a
span of over four and a half
hours. In fact, the game went
so long that the players ended
up eating candy during one of
the intermissions.
"I remember we ran out of
things in between the third
and fourth overtime, and
somebody had Skittles,"' UW
head coach Mark Johnson
said. "The players were eating
Skittles, and we went out, and
Jinelle (Zaugg) scored a goal."
The teams saw more than
two games' worth of ice time
before Zaugg scored a one-
timer in the 127th minute to
propel the Badgers into the
2007 Frozen Four.
"It was a long night," John-
son said. "I'll never forget sit-
ting in the coaching room, I
think it was probably going
into the second overtime, and
it was going to be on tape de-
lay that night. So it was going
to come back on at 10:30. And
we're sitting in the coaching
room watching the start of our game
while we're still playing it at 10:30. And
then come back in the next overtime, and
it's still going on.
"Exciting night. The fans that stuck it
out saw an exciting finish and a great cel-
ebration."
The Badgers had a lot more to cel-
ebrate that year, as a week later, Wis-
consin captured its second national title,
defeating Minnesota Duluth, 4-1, in Lake
Placid, N.Y.
Wisconsin and Harvard have only met
once since that fateful March night, when
UW defeated the Crimson, 4-1, in the
2008 Frozen Four semifinals.
Like 2007, the Badgers hope that their
semifinal against Harvard is the start of
something special.
