CC: Where it all began
First meeting between Wisconsin and
Colorado College proved great foreshadowing
isconsin owns 109
victories all time
against this week's
opponent, Colorado College,
in the second-most played rivalry in school history.
When one looks back
through the record book, it
shows the first meeting between the former WCHA rivals
dates back to Jan. 8, 1965, and
an 8-4 victory for CC in Madison. What the record book
doesn't show is that three of
those on the opposing bench
at Hartmeyer Ice Arena that
day would shape the Wisconsin program for years to come.
Manning the CC bench as
head coach that night was

Bob Johnson. Just two seasons
later, Johnson would take over
the Badgers program and turn
it into a national powerhouse,
winning three NCAA championships.
On the ice for CC at forward
that night was a young man
who was born in Fort Atkinson, Wis. Jeff Sauer would set
up one of CC's eight goals that
day, and would add two goals
the next day to help the Tigers
complete a sweep over UW.
Sauer would eventually take
over the UW program in 1982
from his mentor Johnson and
continue "Badger Bob's" legacy for 20 years at Wisconsin,
bringing two more NCAA titles
