ing a few things over the last few years. There has been more technique involved with positioning and movement of their feet that I probably didn't teach 10 years ago.'' Elliott shared All-America status at Wisconsin with Bernd Bruckler, Kirk Daubenspeck, Duane Derksen, Joseph, Dean Anderson, Roy Schultz, and Julian Baretta. Although he was never accorded that level of recognition as a collegian, Jim Carey went on to the NHL and won the Vezina Trophy with the Washington Capitals in 1996. Even before Howard arrived on the Madison campus, the Badgers had a history of quality goaltending thanks to Gary Johnson, Bob Vroman and Wayne Thomas. There were many tag teams that framed NCAA championship seasons, too. In 1973, it was Jim Makey and Dick Perkins. In 1977, it was Baretta and Mike Dibble. In 1981 and 1983, it was Marc Behrend and Terry Kleisinger. "Behrend and Kleisinger were probably the best tandem I ever had,'' Howard said. "Behrend came out of nowhere ― like Elliott ― and he and Klinger (Kleisinger) were neck and neck and you could play either and not get hurt. Both were about 6-2 and they used their size and competitiveness to their advantage. They had great control of the puck.'' Did that add to the pressure of playing at Wisconsin? "Maybe I put a little more pressure on myself because my family and friends were at the games,'' he said. "Goaltenders tend to put a lot of pressure on themselves wherever they're playing. They always figure the reason a team loses is because of them, and when you play well and you win, you feel good because you know that you had a big role in the game.'' But it went beyond the goalie, Behrend insisted. "I was always really blessed,'' said Behrend, a product of Madison LaFollette High School. "We had some great teams when I played there (Wisconsin). We made it to the final game three years in a row and you don't do that with just a good goaltender or a couple of good players. We had great defensemen and great forwards and great coaches. "With Bob Johnson, Grand Standbrook and Bill Howard, I think our coaching staff had to be one of the best, if not the best staff in the country.
