This particular community's living standard was pretty much indescribable. A car made out of four bottle caps and some old wire was used for a toy. A soccer game was played without shoes for the majority, random shirts for uniforms and a worn- out deflated-but-function-able ball. Shinguards…hah! The following day our R.E.A.C.H. equipment arrived -or was released would be a better term. Surprisingly, I only had to pay customs a few thousand rend (ten dollars) after a day of negotiating and waiting. I gave a pair of shoes to one 11-year-old, who gave the left shoe to his brother and kept the right one for himself. One boy proudly displayed his shirt on backwards; he had never worn a replica jersey. The local coaches and I handed out uniforms for the day's friendly matches. The first game was the U14's. A scuffle ensued between the older players and the coaches and younger players. They were quite upset about something, and later in the day I realized why. After the first game was played, the younger team stripped down to their underwear and passed the dirty kit on to the U16 boys who repeated the same action to pass on one more time to the U18's, for the final game of the day. The play was super. The community 2012 10.01 – R.E.A.C.H. Rush Equipment Assisting Children [ gathered on the hill, supported, cheered and enjoyed the afternoon. The people were hardly downtrodden; they were, in fact, content and even happy. They were appreciative of my visit and the gifts I brought. In the end, it does not matter what country we live in or how much you have, it is about sharing some of your excess… like the 11-year-old and his shoes. Our R.E.A.C.H. program is touching thousands and thousands of people around the world. Thank you for your efforts and sharing with us your secondhand soccer equipment. Facts: • General David Petraeus of the United States Army has personally expressed his desire for the R.E.A.C.H. program to continue, recognizing the positive impact the program has on disadvantaged youth. • In May of 2009, the Colorado State General Assembly approved a Senate Joint Resolution proclaiming an official "Rush R.E.A.C.H. DAY" May 1 of each year. • We have collected, cleaned and delivered over 180,000 pieces of soccer equipment with the help of the U.S. Army, U.S. Navy and FedEx (and you, of course). • R.E.A.C.H. has made the news on CBS, ABC and Good Morning America. • The Rush has clubs in 22 countries not counting the 27 in the U.S. • Membership, are you aware that if you turn in our old uniform we will give you $20.00!
