VIDEO: BADGER BREAKDOWN - UTEP As the starting free safety, he also returned two interceptions for touchdowns. In the 2-AA NCH- SAA state championship game, Doe had nine tack- les and was named the defensive MVP. That was the 48th-straight win for Reidsville, which won three consecutive state titles while Doe was there. Including an unbeaten season at prep school — Oak Ridge (N.C.) Military Academy — Doe's per- sonal winning streak reached 103 games, dating all the way back to the sixth grade. But that didn't carry any weight with North Carolina, NC State or Duke. None of them recruited Doe. Size was not an issue for Oregon State, which extended a scholarship offer to Doe after he com- peted at the Beavers' summer camp in Corvallis. He verbally committed to OSU but had a change of heart after visiting Wisconsin. "This was the place where I needed to be,'' Doe said. Former Badgers running backs coach John Set- tle, now with the Carolina Panthers, had the in- side track on Doe because of his contacts in his hometown of Reidsville. That head start didn't translate statistically dur- ing his freshman season. Appearing in nine games, he caught only two passes. "But it was good get- ting a little bit of playing time and a little bit of experience last year,'' he said. "What I learned is now transferring to this year.'' There has been so much more to learn under first-year receiver coach Zach Azzanni. "Yes sir, I feel like I'm getting a whole lot better,'' said Doe, who matches former UW safety Aaron Henry with the number of "yes sirs'' that will rou- tinely punctuate his conversation. "Coach Z is tell- ing me each and every day that I've got to be the best slot (receiver) in the nation.'' A point of emphasis has been taking care of the little things. "Not being tall and everything,'' Doe said, "It's the little, small things that help me out when I'm running pass routes. I can turn my size to my advantage because when I catch the ball people sometimes don't see me because I'm small. I can use that as an advantage, big-time.'' Sounds like a slam dunk.
