There were mitigating circumstances. Vander Kelen sat out the 1960 season to rehab from knee surgery. The following year, he dropped out of school and went back to Green Bay and worked in construction. Throughout the fall semester, he stayed in touch with the program and was committed to returning to the UW for the spring term in '62. When he did
