As the local arrangements coordinator, Dr. Darnton chairs the Christopher Wren Associa9on Steering Group for Scholas9c Bowl, which organ‐ izes facili9es in two buildings on the William and Mary campus coordinates breakfast/lunch and photography, and recruits and trains 80 volunteers – all to serve VHSL students, coaches and en‐ tourages of the 24 visi9ng schools. Through his extraordi‐ nary efforts, the VHSL Scholas9c Bowl tournament has the repu‐ ta9on as one of the best run and most successful state‐wide VHSL championships. A former President of Missouri Southern State College in Joplin, MO and interim President at both Mansfield State College in Mansfield, PA and West Liberty State College in Wheeling, WVA, Dr. Darnton rose through the ranks of instructor, assistant pro‐ fessor, associate professor and professor of economics and held campus administra9ve posi9ons including assistant department chair and department chair of economics, dean of business and economics, director of special academic programs, vice presi‐ dent for academic affairs in addi‐ 9on to serving his presidencies. He taught and served in adminis‐ tra9ve posi9ons during a career that spanned over 35 years at Ohio University, Virginia Tech, Mansfield State College, Mis‐ souri Southern State College, West Virginia State College and West Liberty State College. A na9ve of Detroit, MI, he earned his bachelor's degree in economics from the College of William and Mary in 1953 and his master's and PhD in econom‐ ics from the University of Michi‐ gan in 1961. Donald Darnton Contributor ‐ Christopher Wren Assoc., William & Mary As the baseball coach at Turner Ashby High School for 17 years (1973‐85, 98‐2002) and at Spotswood High School (1995), Ray Heatwole guided his teams to a 303‐66‐2 overall record; three state championship (1974‐ 75, 2002); one state runner‐up finish (1976); six regional 9tles; and 12 district championships. He was recognized as VHSCA (Virginia High School Coaches As‐ socia9on) baseball coach of the year twice (1979 and 1984); and twice named an NHSACA (Na‐ 9onal High School Athle9c Coaches Associa9on) Coach of the Year for District II in 1979 and 1984. An ac9ve member of the Virginia High School Coaches Associa9on (VHSCA) for over 30 years; Heat‐ wole served on the VHSCA Leg‐ isla9ve Commi:ee and as the baseball representa9ve on the VHSCA Execu9ve Commi:ee. He coordinated the VHSCA all‐star baseball selec9ons as well as serving as member of the all‐ state baseball selec9on commit‐ tee. Heatwole also served as the head coach in the inaugural VHSCA all‐star baseball game. He also volunteered as a clinician for numerous baseball clinics for the VHSSCA and for the NHSACA. Inducted into the Turner Ashby High School Hall of Fame, the baseball field at Turner Ashby is named Ray Heatwole Field. Born in Harrisonburg, he gradu‐ ated from Turner Ashby High School in 1963 and received his bachelor's in health and physical educa9on from Bridgewater Col‐ lege in 1967. He also has a mas‐ ter's degree in health and physical educa9on from James Madison University. Heatwole re9red from coaching in 2003 and teaching in 2005. He resides in Harrisonburg. Ray Heatwole Coach ‐ Baseball Turner Ashby HS The most decorated runner in VHSL history, Bobby Lockhart completed his running career at John Handley High School in Winchester (1998‐2002) with a VHSL record 18 individual 9tles and 19 championships overall. His mul9ple VHSL records in‐ clude: most consecu9ve state cross country 9tles (4); most in‐ door track championships (6); most outdoor track champi‐ onships (8) and was a four‐year winner of the 1600 meter out‐ door race. In addi9on to his four cross country 9tles; Lockhart's other 9tles include…indoor track (1600 meters – 3 9mes; 3200 meters – 3 9mes); outdoor track (800 meters – 1 9me; 3200 meter relay – 1 9me; 1600 me‐ ters – 3 9mes; 3200 meters – 4 9mes). In addi9on to his state achievements; Lockhart also claimed five district and seven region championships in cross country, indoor track and out‐ door track. He also finished first in the two mile at the Adidas Outdoor Track and Field Champi‐ onship and at the Nike Indoor Track and Field Classic Na9onal Meet in 2002. Other honors included: Gatorade Virginia Boys track and field ath‐ lete of the Year in 2001‐2002; Washington Post All‐Met Athlete of the Year; Washington Post All‐ Met Runner of the Year and se‐ lected to the Washington Post All‐Met first team four 9mes in cross country and track and field. A standout distance runner at the University of Wisconsin, he was twice an NCAA All‐American earning the honor once each in cross country and outdoor track (10,000‐meter run). He was twice named to the All‐Big 10 Conference Cross Country team. He currently is the men's assis‐ tant cross country and track coach at Oklahoma State Univer‐ sity and resides in S9llwater, OK. Bobby Lockhart Athlete ‐ Cross Country/Track John Handley HS With a career 431‐134 record at Prince George (1959‐62), Falls Church (1964‐66), West Spring‐ field (1967‐75), Hayfield (1977‐ 78) and Mount Vernon (1978‐88), seven region 9tles, two state championships (1961 and 1979), and two state runner‐ up finishes (1972 and 1974), Don McCool is recognized as one of the most respected and influen‐ 9al basketball coaches in Virginia High School League history. In addi9on, McCool was selected as VHSCA (Virginia High School Coaches Associa9on) coach of the year in 1989. A(er officially "re9ring" as head coach in 1988, McCool has been instrumental in the development of numerous coaches in North‐ ern Virginia. For 25 years, he served as an assistant coach and mentor to his former assistant coaches and players as they built successful programs. His coach‐ ing tree includes: Brian Metress, Rich Lyons, Jim Warren, Chip Mc‐ Cool, Todd Crowley, Bill Pope, Mark Sewell, Derek Steele, Eric Brent, Tracey Scruggs, Frank Smith, Barry Smith and Dave Trickler. In addi9on, McCool played a piv‐ otal and influen9al role in inte‐ gra9on in Northern Virginia. His Falls Church teams were among the first to integrate in Fairfax County and at Mount Vernon, he became the first head basketball coach in the region to start five black players. A 1952 graduate of Parkersburg (WVA) High School, McCool earned his BS in engineering from Marie:a College in Mari‐ e:a, Ohio in 1956 and captain of back‐to‐back Ohio Athle9c Con‐ ference Championship teams. He was inducted into the Marie:a College Hall of Fame in 1990. He received his master's from the University of Wisconsin in 1963. He resides in Eatonton, GA.
