THE LEAGUER 122 V I R G I N I A H I G H S C H O O L L E A G U E Owner of one of the most dis9n‐ guished basketball state and na‐ 9onal careers, Alonzo Mourning led his Indian River High School tam to the 1987 VHSL Group AAA state 9tle and an incredible 51 consecu9ve wins. He was the Na9onal High School Player of the Year by Naismith, Parade, USA Today and Gatorade follow‐ ing his senior year a(er averag‐ ing 25 points, 15 rebounds and 12 block shots per game. He fin‐ ished his career with 2,105 points. Beyond high school, Mourning was a three‐9me All‐American at Georgetown University, leading the Hoyas to four NCAA tourna‐ ments and became the first player in Big East history to be named Conference Player of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year and Tournament MVP in the same season. He was one of only two Georgetown basketball players to have graduated with over 2,000 points and 1,000 re‐ bounds. He was the second over‐ all pick in the 1992 NBA dra( by the Charlo:e Hornets. A seven‐ 9me NBA all‐star and two‐9me NBA Defensive Player of the Year, he won an NBA 9tle in 2006 with the Miami Heat and finished his 15‐year NBA career with 14,311 points, 7,137 re‐ bounds and 2,356 blocks (11th all‐9me in NBA history). A mem‐ ber of the 2000 US Olympic gold medal winning team, Morning capped his brilliant career with his induc9on into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2014. His charitable work through the Mourning Family Founda9on led the Miami‐Dade School Board to name a new high school in his honor; and Zo's Fund for Life is a charitable founda9on dedicated to find a cure for kidney disease. Mourning is currently the Miami Heat Vice President for player programs. Alonzo Mourning Athlete ‐ Basketball Indian River HS Ted Salmon's contribu9ons as a high school athlete, coach, teacher and athle9c administra‐ tor are unsurpassed during a life‐ 9me commi:ed to the Virginia High School League. Entering his 42nd year as athle9c director/director of student ac‐ 9vi9es, Salmon has been at Cosby High School since 2006 and served in that same posi9on at Clover Hill from 1974‐2006. He has directed over 200 district, conference, regional and state events, including the past nine VHSL state basketball champi‐ onships. His numerous awards and honors include athle9c ad‐ ministrator of the year at the dis‐ trict and region level; VIAAA state athle9c administrator of the year; VHSL Regional Award of Merit and the NIAAA State Award of Merit. He has also served on the VIAAA Board of Di‐ rectors in various leadership roles since 1976, in addi9on to serving as chairman on numer‐ ous VHSL district and conference commi:ees. Salmon served as Clover Hill's football coach for 26 years (1975‐2000) winning 151 games and five district championships. He was named district and the Richmond Touchdown Club Coach of the Year four 9mes. He was inducted into the Clover Hill Hall of Fame in 2005 and the sta‐ dium at Clover Hill is named Ted Salmon Stadium. Salmon graduated from Mead‐ owbrook High School in 1968 where he captained both the football and basketball teams. He was inducted into the Mead‐ owbrook Wall of Fame in 2006. He a:ended East Carolina Uni‐ versity and was a three‐year lfootball e:ermen and two‐year starter for the Pirates. Salmon graduated in 1972 with a degree in history and poli9cal science. He resides in Chesterfield. Ted Salmon Contributor ‐ Athle3c Director Clover Hill/Cosby HS One of the most accomplished track athletes in Virginia High School League history, Keena Schuler Wood finished her out‐ standing running career at Broadway High School with 21 individual state indoor and out‐ door track championships. She was a nine‐9me indoor state champion in the 55‐meter, 300‐ meter, and 500‐meter events and was a member of the 4x400‐ meter relay team. In outdoor track, she truly dominated win‐ ning nine individual champi‐ onships in the 100‐meter (1995‐97); 200‐meter (1995‐97) and 400‐meter races (1995‐97). She led her Broadway team to a runner‐up finish at the Group AA 1995 state championships scor‐ ing all 30 points, just falling short of Chris9ansburg's total of 34 points. Schuler's other honors include: #1 ranking by Track & Field Mag‐ azine in the indoor 300‐meter run in 1996; All‐American honors for placing 7th in the 100‐meter dash at the outdoor na9onals; chosen as one of 14 Virginia high school track athletes to travel to Russia to compete in a sports ex‐ change program; Daily News Record Athlete of the Year hon‐ ors twice and was inducted into the inaugural Broadway High School Athle9c Hall of Fame. She con9nued her running ca‐ reer at the University of Col‐ orado (1997‐2001) and was a member of the Big 12 distance medley championship team and 4x400 team. She received her bachelor's degree in sociology from Colorado in 2001 and cur‐ rently resides in Lynchburg. Keena Schuler Wood Athlete ‐ Track Broadway HS Class of 2015
