CampUs neWs charlotte living-learning CommUnities A unique, residential learning experience offered on the Charlotte Campus is a program called Living- Learning Communities (LLC). It gives students the opportunity to live and attend programming with other students who share academic or special interests. LLC events also provide opportunities for students and faculty to engage in meaningful ways outside the classroom. This year, three LLCs (Culinary, Baking & Pastry, Business/Hospitality) have proven successful in bridging the gap between residential life and academics. Twenty-four faculty members have participated in LLC events, and their involvement has been critical to the program's success. Events have included touring Time Warner Cable Arena and attending a Charlotte Checkers hockey game, culinary demonstrations and competitions, a cupcake social, touring an Asian market and visiting local bakeries. stephen byrD DireCtor of athletiCs Stephen Byrd is excited to expand the varsity sports program and assist in providing all Charlotte Campus students with the most complete collegiate experience possible. Byrd also works with his staff to maintain recreational programming options for the general student population. He hopes to offer students a variety of constructive recreational activities, both on and off campus. "I feel that it is imperative that we maintain quality recreational activities, such as intramural sports and group fitness classes, in order to effectively engage our total campus community of students, faculty, staff and alumni," he says. Byrd's career at JWU began in 2007 as the director of athletics. He is a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He continued his education at Western Kentucky University, earning his master's degree in communications. Right: LLC students enjoyed hiking Crowder's Mountain with faculty and residential life staff.
