Natalie Owens, a Baking & Pastry Arts student, says that she's gaining an
advantage before she enters the lab for the first time. Faculty and staff
are encouraged to take the Student Engagement Pledge — a pledge to
spend time with a student outside the classroom to enhance the student
experience.
Owens, a Living-Learning Community student, met Chef Ed Batten, a
Baking & Pastry Arts associate instructor, at a number of LLC sponsored
events, including Thanksgiving dinner. While manning his homemade hot
apple cider station, Batten initiated a conversation with Owens. "I told him
how I would be starting labs soon, and it dawned on me that he would
be my instructor," Owens said. "With all the nerves that come with being
a new student, I was elated to discover that I would be learning from
someone I already knew."
This year, more than 100 faculty and staff are enjoying time with students
like Owens at athletic events, movie nights and a variety of residential life
programs — away from the textbooks.
