Returning starters in bold. TEAM OUTLOOK Washington State looks primed to have one of its best seasons in recent history. The Cougs relied on last year's freshman class, which was ranked the 21st-best recruiting class in the nation. This season, those sophomores, along with six juniors and seniors on the roster, look to take Washing- ton State to another level of play. WSU has found success in the non-conference portion of the season the last few years but has struggled to carry that momentum into the Pac-12 portion of the slate. Riding the successes of senior Kyra Holt, who has been the anchor on offense since arriving on campus, WSU looks to make a statement in 2016. STRENGTHS » Kyra Holt (pictured) is the biggest strength for the Cougars. Entering her final campaign, she has been a consistent threat, leading the team in kills and scoring in each of her first three seasons. The former AVCA North Pacific Region Freshman of the Year returns as the Conference's active kills leader. She was named All-Pac-12 last season and was voted to the Preseason All-Pac-12 team this year. » Sophomore outside hitter McKenna Woodford stepped right in as a freshman into a starting role and was second on the team in kills and points per set behind Holt. She had the second-most attempts behind Holt, at over 1,000 swings on the season. Woodford will need to work on her efficiency but has already started off her collegiate career strong. » Senior Haley MacDonald returns to direct the offense from the setter position in 2016. She ranked third in the Confer- ence at over 10.00 assists per set last year. With a more experienced group on the floor with her, that number could improve. She also has a pair of experienced backups in junior Nicole Rigoni and sophomore Katelyn Vander Tuig. » Washington State could be one of the taller teams in the nation with six players standing at 6-3 or taller. Among them is sophomore middle blocker Claire Martin, who, at 6-4, ranked third in the Pac-12 with 1.31 blocks per set. CONCERNS » Washington State continues its struggles with hitting efficiency, posting a .186 hitting percentage as a team. Though some of that could be attributed to youth, in order to make strides, the team will need to connect on swings to score points. » WSU is green at the libero poition, with just two freshman listed at the position. Ranking third in digs per set as a team, newcomers Alexis Dirige and Treyanna Freitas will look to shorten the learning curve to be an immediate impact. » WSU will be challenged in non-conference play after facing a tougher non-league slate than in previous years. Non- conference success has not been a problem in recent seasons, but Pac-12 play has. How WSU will bridge the two with a tougher non-league schedule remains to be seen.
