SEASON REVIEW SEASON REVIEW 2010 GAME-BY-GAME RECAP NEW MEXICO STATE Game #6 Fresno State 33, New Mexico State 10 October 16, 2010 FRESNO, Calif. - Sophomore running back Robbie Rouse rushed for a season-high 150 yards and two touchdowns Saturday night as Fresno State rolled over New Mexico State 33-10 in Fresno State's Centennial game. It was Fresno State's 17th straight win over the Aggies. Rouse ran for scores of 57 and 38 yards in the first half and Ryan Colburn completed 12 of 20 passes for 132 yards and a touchdown for Fresno State (4-2, 2-1 WAC). The Bulldogs scored all but three of their points in the first half. Chris Carter led the Bulldogs' defense with nine tackles and three sacks, including two forced fumbles. Carter, a first-team All-WAC player in 2009, has seven sacks on the season. He led a Bulldog defense that held the Aggies to three points and just 34 net rushing yards through the first three quarters. NMSU added a late touchdown against the Bulldog reserves. Fresno State's defense also forced a safety and harrassed the Aggie's quartebacks all night long. Colburn threw one touchdown pass to sophomore tight end Tapa Taumoepeau, and freshman Isaiah Burse scored on a reverse as Fresno State jumped to a 30-3 lead by halftime, Fresno State's only points in the second half came off the foot of kicker Kevin Goessling, an All-America and Lou Groza Award candidate. Goessling kicked a 47-yard field goal early in the fourth quarter. Robbie Rouse dashed for 116 yards and scored two touchdowns and receiver Isaiah Burse threw for a touchdown on a flashy reverse in the Bulldogs' third WAC win of the 2010 season and fifth victory of the year. Fresno State (5-2, 3-1 WAC) bolted to a 20-0 lead and never looked back. Kevin Goessling kicked a career-high four field goals, which marked the first time a Bulldog launched four in a single game since Asen Apsparuhov did so in 2002. Goessling connected on all four of his attempts (43, 44, 37 and 29) and extended his school-record successful PATs to 116 straight. Fresno State returned to their running game and consistently attacked on the ground and through the air. The Dogs tallied 185 rushing yards and Ryan Colburn delivered a 10 of 18 performance for 125 passing yards. Jordan La Secla threw for 292 yards and touchdown passes of 46 and 63 yards for the Spartans (1-7, 0-3), who lost their fifth straight against one of the nation's most demanding schedules. The Bulldogs drove to midfield before turning the ball over on downs with 1:26 left. Fresno State scored 10 straight points to go ahead 34-28. The touchdown came on a spectacular 44-yard touchdown run by Rouse. The Bulldogs got excellent field position on their opening drive of the second half when Nevada punter Brad Langley booted the ball off the back of a teammate's helmet. Fresno State took over at midfield and found the end zone four plays later when the left-handed Colburn scrambled to his right and found Isaiah Burse down the middle for a 26-yard touchdown. Kaepernick answered with a 19-yard touchdown run, faking the handoff before taking off up the middle, as the Wolf Pack regained a 28-24 lead with 9:28 left in the third quarter. Trailing 34-28 following Fresno State's 10-point surge, Nevada marched downfield for the potential go-ahead touchdown. But on 4th-and-1 from the Bulldogs 8, Kyle Knox and Desia Dunn smothered Taua for no gain. Fresno State failed to move the ball, and the Wolf Pack took over on its 46 to set up Taua's go- ahead score. Rouse was coming off a career-high 286-yard effort in Fresno State's 40-34 victory over Louisiana Tech. Nevada scored two touchdowns in a 27-second span late in the second quarter to take a 21-17 halftime lead. The Wolf Pack trailed by 10 before two TDs by Taua swung the momentum. One was set up by Colburn fumbling. Kaepernick shook off a sluggish start by leading Nevada on a 10-play, 73-yard drive, capped by a 4-yard Taua touchdown run with 1:01 left before halftime. The senior converted two third downs on pass completions during the march to trim Fresno State's lead to 17-14. On the ensuing possession, Colburn dropped back and the ball slipped from his hand without being touched. Ryan Coulson made the recovery for Nevada on the Bulldogs 20. Following a 19-yard pass to Brandon Wimberly, the Wolf Pack was in the end zone again when Taua plunged in from 1 yard with 34 seconds left. Nevada even got the ball back on a squib kick but could not move the football in the final 27 seconds. Fresno State led 17-7 with 4:18 remaining in the second quarter on a 42-yard field goal by Kevin Goessling. Rouse scored the Bulldogs' first two touchdowns on a 12-yard catch and a 2-yard run on Fresno State's opening drive. Kaepernick passed for 114 yards and ran for 95 in the first half. His only mistake was an interception by safety Lorne Bell for a touchback that went right through the hands receiver Malcolm Shepherd. After Fresno State scored on its opening drive, Kaepernick pulled the Wolf Pack even by faking the handoff and running around the right end 47 yards for a touchdown. The rest of the night, he was nearly flawless, perhaps topped only by a dominant performance from the Broncos' defense. Moore shook off an interception and fumble in the first quarter to throw for 333 yards and four touchdowns, two each to Titus Young -- who caught eight passes for a career-high 164 yards -- and Austin Pettis, and the Broncos (No. 3 BCS, No. 4 AP) used a smothering defense to rout Fresno State 51-0 on Friday night. With the rest of the BCS hierarchy -- Oregon, Auburn and TCU -- taking the weekend off, Boise State was the main attraction. And after stumbling early, the Broncos didn't disappoint. Wearing all-orange uniforms for what was believed to be the first time in nearly 20 years, the Broncos (10-0, 6-0 WAC) rolled to their 24th straight win, extending the longest streak in the country. The Broncos handed Fresno State its first shutout loss since a 10-0 loss to San Diego State on Nov. 7, 1998. The Bulldogs entered Friday night averaging nearly 400 yards and 35 points. The Bulldogs (6-4, 4-3) managed just nine first downs and 125 total yards. Ryan Colburn was sacked four times and the Bulldogs gained 42 of their 125 yards on their final drive. Robbie Rouse was the one asked to ground out this one for the Bulldogs, appearing especially dangerous after running for 286 yards against Louisiana Tech and following up with 217 last week against Nevada. Aside from one dash for 23 yards, Rouse was a non-factor, gaining 37 of his 70 yards on the Bulldogs' final drive. Colburn caught the ire of Hill on a few occasions for his decisions and finished 6-of- 23 for 76 yards. Moore, who completed 27-of-38 passes, and Young also added their names to even more pages in the Boise State record books. Moore became the school's career leader in yards passing, jumping past Ryan Dinwiddie. By the end of the regular season, Moore could crack the 10,000-yard mark. Not surprisingly, Young has been on the receiving end of many of those yards and became Boise State's career leader in yards receiving on a 42-yard touchdown reception in the second quarter that made it 17-0. Even kicker Kyle Brotzman got into the record book, becoming the school's career scoring leader, helped by field goals of 20, 20 and 50 yards. Pettis added 10 catches for 93 yards and touchdown catches of 15 and 6 yards in the third quarter. Fresno State's best chance of at least making the chilly night interesting came on the lost fumble by Moore, who let the ball slip from his hands as he started his throwing motion. Defensive tackle Logan Harrell came up with the fumble and started toward the end zone, but the play was called an incompletion on the field. It was overturned on replay, but Harrell had nothing but blue turf between himself and the end zone. Colburn was sacked on the ensuing possession, ending the Bulldogs' best chance at a score.
