The Tar Heels (8-5 overall, 4-4 ACC) finished with eight wins for the third straight season and won their first bowl game under head coach Butch Davis. For a complete recap of the bowl win, see pages 107-108. Team Captains • Quarterback T.J. Yates, tailback Johnny White, linebacker Bruce Carter and defensive tackle Tydreke Powell were voted permanent team captains midway through the 2010 season. The special teams cap- tains, which are determined by the coaches’ point system, were Ryan Taylor and Zach Brown. Yates Establishes More Than 40 School Records • Senior quarterback T.J. Yates (Marietta, Ga.) established more than 40 school records at North Carolina, including career passing yards and single-season passing yards. Yates had an outstanding season completing 66.8 percent of his attempts (282 of 422) for 3,418 yards and 19 touchdowns. A 2010 honorable-mention All-ACC pick, he ranked second in the league in pass efficiency, second in passing yards and second in total offense. He is the first player in school history to throw for more than 3,000 yards in a single-season. • On the UNC single-season charts, Yates ranks first in passing yards, completions and attempts, and second in touchdown passes. • In North Carolina’s 37-35 win at Florida State, Yates was 24 of 35 for a school-record 439 yards and three touchdowns. He became the first player in program history to pass for 400 or more yards twice in a career (later set the mark for a third time vs. NC State). Yates also set the school record with 443 total yards of offense vs. the Seminoles. He had 439 yards passing and four rushing. • Against NC State, Yates finished 33 of 44 for 411 yards and two touchdowns, his fourth 300-plus yard game of the season and his third 400-plus yard game. His 33 completions were a school single-game record. The previous record was 31 by Kevin Anthony against LSU in 1985 and Darian Durant against Syracuse in 2003.
