Big weekend awaits
young Badgers at Big Tens
UW looks to gain championship experience
W
isconsin women's
track and field
coach Jim Stintzi
admits that his squad enters
this weekend's 2014 Big Ten
Outdoor Championships in
West Lafayette, Indiana, with
a squad full of young Badgers
looking for success on the big
stage.
"It's kind of a chance for our
younger athletes to actually
be kind of put into a baptism
by fire situation," Stintzi said.
"They're going to be the ones
who we're going to rely on at
the Big Ten and beyond this
year, and who we have relied
on so far."
Two of the Badgers' vet-
erans, Deanna Latham and
Kelsey Card, are redshirting
this outdoor season but are
still competing unattached
and putting up big marks. Card's discus
throw of 193 feet, 4 inches last Saturday
would have set not only a school record,
but a Big Ten record as well. Latham has
also competed unattached, setting a per-
sonal-best score of 5,745 points in the
heptathlon earlier this season.
Stintzi believes the redshirt season
will help not only the duo develop their
skills, but will help the team next year.
"They both have NCAA experience and
have both placed at the NCAAs," Stintzi
said. "But we feel that they can be major,
major players both at the NCAA and ob-
viously the Big Ten championships next
year."
Despite not having Latham and Card
competing this week, the Badgers look
to make some noise at the Big Ten meet.
The distance trio of Sarah Disanza, Em-
ma-Lisa Murphy and Molly Hanson look
to score points in the distance races,
while senior Erin Cawley is a threat to
pick up points in the steeplechase.
Freshman Georgia Ellenwood looks to
extend the Badgers' run of four straight
titles in the heptathlon, while Angela
Boushea and Laura McGinnis look to
build off PR performances last weekend
in the hammer throw and triple jump, re-
spectively.
"We're looking forward to the Big Ten
championships," Stintzi said. "It will be
an interesting meet without those two
(Latham and Card), but it will be a great
chance for our team to grow and some of
a few of our older athletes to show lead-
ership and our younger athletes to kind
of learn what Big Ten competition is like."
