62 // VARSITY May 15, 2014 INSIDE FOOTBALL See you Sunday: Badgers continue producing pros Wisconsin now boasts 39 players on NFL rosters BY BRIAN MASON @BADGERFOOTBALL W hat do you say to a player who gave his all to the Wiscon- sin football program for four or five years when the time comes for him to move on? "See you on Sunday" seems appropriate. Five Badgers heard their names called over the course of the three-day NFL draft last week, with Dezmen Southward (Atlanta) and Chris Borland (San Francisco) going in the third round, James White (New England) in the fourth, Jared Abbrederis (Green Bay) in the fifth and Beau Allen (Philadelphia) in the seventh. That gave Wisconsin more picks than all but six schools: LSU (9), Alabama (8), Notre Dame (8), Florida State (7), Ohio State (6) and Stanford (6). The Badgers' streak of having a first- round pick ended at three straight years, but UW extended its run of seeing at least one player drafted to 36 consecutive seasons ― a streak that dates to 1979. Wisconsin has had at least four players taken in 11 of the last 15 drafts, dating back to 2000. Over the last four seasons, a total of 19 Badgers have been selected in the draft, a Big Ten-leading total surpassed nationally by just six schools: Alabama (30), LSU (29), Florida State (25), Georgia (23), Oklahoma (21) and North Carolina (21). In addition to their five draft picks, the Badgers saw another four players ― Ryan Groy (Chicago), Ethan Hemer (Pittsburgh), Jacob Pedersen (Atlanta) and Brian Wozniak (Atlanta) ― sign free agent deals to bring the total of Badgers on active NFL rosters to 39. MORE GAME TIMES SET ● The 2014 season is more than three months away, but fans can already set their calendars for a fourth of the Bad- gers' regular-season schedule. UW's Homecoming clash with league newcomer Maryland will kick off at 11 a.m. on Oct. 25. The same goes for the Badgers' first-ever road trip to Rutgers the following week, when UW will play in the Scarlet Knights' Home- coming game at 11 a.m. on Nov. 1. SCHEDULE COMING UP Aug. 30 vs. LSU 8 p.m. AdvoCare Texas Kickoff Sept. 6 Western Illinois TBA Sept. 20 Bowling Green TBA Sept. 27 South Florida TBA Jared Abbrederis will stay close to home after being drafted by Green Bay
