49 Since then, UI rowing has been up and down, some of which has been influenced by unfavorable rowing conditions at the two-day Clemson Invitational. In- clement weather also ruined the team's home regatta with Minnesota scheduled for April 27. "Clemson had some adverse conditions for them as far as the course went," Carter said. "ey stumbled in the first round of racing, and we had some hard conversations between that and the second round. ey bounced back pretty well and that's exciting because they didn't get down and all of the crews put together gutsy racing against stiff competition." e Hawkeyes are eager to show what they are made of at Tennessee and at the Big Ten Championships at Eagle Creek Park in Indianapolis on May 18. Last season, the UI posted 54 points and finished sixth overall — ahead of Indiana — who placed seventh with 28 points. Ohio State claimed the title with 160 points and went on to become 2013 NCAA Champi- ons. "I want to see them go through this weekend and feel good about where they are," Carter said. "I want them to take that approach in two competitions in a row, so we can set a good tone have a good platform to go through the summer and come back here in the fall." Looking for Strength By JIL PRICE F irst-year head rowing coach Andrew Carter is looking for a strong performance across the board from his crews that will spring- board the Hawkeyes into the Big Ten Champion- ships. e squad will have an opportunity to do that against a traditionally strong Tennessee Lady Volunteers crew on May 3 in Knoxville, Tenn. "Jumping into the Big Ten Championships it's important that they come off a strong competition and feel good about their standing," Carter said. "If they do that, the result against Tennessee could be quite good. We had some crossover racing with them at Clemson and it has all the makings of some really tight racing. Tennessee is a strong program, so if we can hang with them or even get out in front of them; it can put our team in a great frame of mind heading into the Big Ten Champi- onships. "It's important that they have a strong performance independent of Tennessee. Each of our crews has had strong outings and each of our crews have had lackluster outings. ere's no rhythm to it, some- times they hit and sometimes they miss." e Hawkeyes started the season off right, defeat- ing then-ranked No. 20 Duke in 2-of-3 NCAA events and narrowly missing wins over then- ranked No. 18 Clemson. e 2V4+ — comprised of junior Rachel Crosley, freshman Kasia Gniatc- zyk, freshman Bec Clayton, sophomore Skylar McSorley, and sophomore coxswain Rachel Cham- bers — was named Big Ten Boat of the Week aer finishing first by nearly 12 seconds.
