UW celebrates 1st NCAA title after 40 years
T
hey are forever known
as the first team in
Wisconsin hockey history to capture an NCAA
championship. It has been
40 years since "Badger
Bob" Johnson led his 1973
charges to Boston Garden
and comeback victories
over Cornell and Denver.
That is the where Dean
Talafous scored a few of
the biggest goals in program history, tallying with
five seconds left in regulation and with 33 seconds
left in overtime to complete a comeback from four
goals down against Cornell
in the national semifinals.
The 6-5 victory led to
a second comeback win,

this time in the title game
against Denver. The 4-2
victory saw Talafous once
again score the winning
goal after the Badgers recovered from a 2-1 deficit.
This Friday, the group
returns to Madison to relive their championship
moments.

Honored captains
» The 1973 team returns to
celebrate 50 years of modern era Badger hockey. So
does Scott Mellanby, a 21year NHL veteran who will
serve as Friday's honorary
captain. 1973 and 1977
NCAA champion Steve Alley will serve as honorary
captain on Saturday.
Skate with the Badgers
» It's time to "Skate with the Badgers" this Sunday at the Kohl
Center. The event runs 4:30-6:30
p.m., and fans can get a look inside
the program's new locker room in
LaBahn Arena. Skates are required
to get on the ice, but skate rentals
are not available.
