2018 PAC-12 SOFTBALL // INTRODUCTION 2 0 1 7 – 2 0 1 8 5 PAC-12 SOFTBALL HISTORY The Pac-12 Conference upholds its reputation as the nation's elite conference for softball year after year. The Conference has claimed 23 national titles since the NCAA began sponsoring a softball championship in 1982. While some schools have supported softball programs since the AIAW years, official Pac-12 play did not begin until 1987 with six schools participating. Stanford and Washington joined the league in 1993. The Conference welcomed Utah for the 2012 season. Pac-12 schools have consistently topped the polls and hoisted the trophy at the year's end. UCLA and Arizona combined for eight titles in the 1990s and the Pac-12 has won 10 titles since 2000. Pac-12 schools have produced 16 Honda Award winners and over 200 All-Americans. These standout players include Nancy Evans, Lisa Fernandez, Jennie Finch, Michelle Granger, Susie Parra and Dot Richardson. Three Pac-12 players have been named USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year. UCLA catcher Stacey Nuveman won in 2002, while Washington pitcher Danielle Lawrie received back-to-back awards in 2009 and 2010. Stanford shortstop Ashley Hansen is the most recent winner in 2011.
