The baseball team was "Hornets," the football team "Hurricane," and the basketball team "Paladins." The basketball team was dubbed "Paladins" Furman University athletic teams were by a Greenville sportswriter in the 1930s, and the name stuck. By vote of the student body, all Furman athletic teams became the "Paladins" on September 15, 1961. A Paladin is a knight on a horse, and is the recognized mascot of Furman's athletic teams. L. vs. Samford, 1-0 (Semis) SOCCER INFORMATION HOW TO GET TO FURMAN UNIVERSITY tFrom Asheville, N.C., and points northwest: Take I-26 to Hendersonville, N.C., then U.S. 25 south. Stay on U.S. 25 business to Furman University exit. tFrom Charlotte, N.C., and points northeast: Take I-85 to Greenville. Take I-385 to North Pleasantburg Drive (Route 291). Follow 291 six miles north to U.S. 25 business and U.S. 276. Proceed three miles north to Furman University exit. tFrom Atlanta, Ga., and points southwest: Take I-85 to U.S. 25 (White Horse Road). Proceed 12 miles north to Duncan Chapel Road. Turn right and drive .8 mile to campus gate on your left. tFrom Columbia, S.C., and points southeast. Take I-26 to I-385. Take North Pleasantburg Drive (Route 291) six miles north to U.S. 25 business and U.S. 276. Proceed three miles north to Furman University exit. tTo Get to Stone Soccer Stadium: Entering campus at the main campus gate, drive 3/4 of the way around the traffic circle and turn right down the mall toward the Physical Activities Center (PAC). Stone Stadium is to the right of the PAC with parking available between the PAC and the Furman football fieldhouse. Furman University welcomes your coverage of Furman women's soccer in 2012.
