2012 FURMAN UNIVERSITY p BASEBALL Paladin Profiles 9 Alex ABRAMS Charleston, South Carolina Bishop England High School 3B/P p 6-2 p 196 p Sophomore Furman: Returning starting third baseman who figures to be a big key to the Paladin infield and in the middle of the batting order...garnered 2012 Coaches Preseason All-SoCon second team honors... may also be a factor as a pitcher in a late inning reliever/closer role after recording quality work last summer as a member of North Charleston's Dixie Major (17-19) state championship team...threw a complete game, three-hitter to beat Westminster, 5-0, in state title contest...allowed only one run on five hits over 12 innings in state tournament. 2011 — Fashioned an impressive inaugural season, appearing in 50 games and earning 44 starts at third base...named to the SoCon All-Freshman Team and was also selected to the SoCon All-Tournament squad...batted a solid .289 with one home run and 18 RBI...led the team with a .431 on base percentage, drawing a team leading 35 walks, the fourth highest season tally in Furman history....was even more impressive in the field, recording a .955 fielding percentage (tops among SoCon third basemen) with only six errors in 133 chances... played error free ball over his final 21 games...went 7-for-9 with two RBI and two runs scored in three SoCon Tournament games, including 3-for-3, two-run performance in 12-6 opening round victory over UNC Greensboro...stroked a two-run, ninth inning single against Appalachian State to tie the game at 2-2 en route to a 3-2 Paladin victory...home run came against The Citadel (7-6 win). RHP p 6-1 p 251 p Junior Furman: Will sit out the 2012 season after undergoing Tommy John surgery in the preseason... absence will be a big blow to the Paladin bullpen. 2011 — Fashioned a break-thru campaign in a new role as a reliever, working primarily as Furman's set-up man...led the team in appearances (31), helping the squad to a 16-15 record in the games in which he pitched...went 2-2 with a 3.62 ERA...worked 37 1/3 innings (39 H, 6 BB, 19 K)...issued only one walk in his first 18 games.... opponents hit .277 against him...was most effective against left-handers (.195)...didn't allow a run in seven of his first eight appearances (10.0 IP, 1.80 ERA)...hurled 2 1/3 perfect frames (2 K) in his first mound appearance in a 12-5 win over Ohio...worked a season high 3.0 innings (3 H, 1 R, 1 K) against UNC Greensboro (6-5 win)...tossed 2 2/3 frames (2 H, 0 R, 3 K) in Furman's 12-6 SoCon Tournament first round victory over UNCG...was an all-star selection with the Cal Ripken League Vienna River Dogs over the summer. 2010 — Saw action in 12 games and earned two starts as a designated hitter...primarily served in a pinch-hit capacity...belted a pinch-hit solo home run in an 11-9 victory over Ohio.
