MEN'S TRACK & FIELD
A MAN OF MANY TALENTS
Just a sophomore, Japheth Cato is establishing himself as one of the nation's best — even though he's still learning the ropes

apheth Cato was such a versatile high school track athlete that it prompted his dad Andrew to Google — just for grins — what type of company his son might be keeping if he continued on that path. The Google entry was "multi-event athlete'' and the response that came back was "decathlete.''
Brian Clay and Trey Hardee were among the names that came up. Clay won the gold medal in the decathlon at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Hardee won the gold medal in the decathlon at the 2011 World Championships, continuing a run of dominance for the U.S. in the event. Armed with the Google results, Andrew Cato passed along the information. "My dad came home and said, 'They're called decathletes and they do this and
that,''' Japheth Cato remembered. "At first, I was a little leery. But it got me think- ing about it.''
