D espite snow and chilly temperatures across much of the country, more than 120 alumni, housestaff, students and faculty came together for a winter weekend getaway at the UVa Medical alumni association's 49th annual Meeting in Williamsburg on February 20-21. the weekend kicked off with a MedConnect networking session, giving students and physician attendees the opportunity to get to know each other. the session was followed by a welcome reception and research poster exhibit, featuring the work of some outstanding UVa medical, biomedical, medical scientist training program students and housestaff. the evening concluded with a fife and drum escort to dinner at the King's arm tavern. annualmeeting 49th annual Meeting • fEBRuARy 20-21, 2015 saturday's activities began with an informative and interac- tive CME session that included a medical student panel and a team- based learning exercise on the gastrointestinal system. the session concluded with a skype presenta- tion titled "thinking inside the Box" by Karen s. Rheuban, MD, of the UVa Center for telehealth. a concurrent friends and family book discussion featured UVa anthropology professor Richard Handler, PhD, author of "the New History in an Old Museum: Creating the Past at Colonial Williamsburg." in the afternoon, guests had the opportunity to participate in a walking tour and learn about the training and role of apothecaries in colonial times. the Mac Roy Gasque, MD Memorial Reception and Black tie Gala on saturday night was a highlight for many attendees. Guests enjoyed a three-course dinner with wine pairing while listening to updates on the UVa Medical alumni association and Medical school Foundation from President Wallace F. andrew, Jr., MD '75. an update on the school of Medicine was given by interim Dean Randolph J. Can- terbury, MD, DFaPa. in addition, Elizabeth Carr, MD '88, pre- sented the Outstanding Research Poster awards to Christopher Hill, sMD15, for his poster entitled, "Chemoprophylaxis for venous thromboembolism increases bleed- ing risk in patients undergoing 2 Vitals Spring 2015
