Kennedy | Hematology- Oncology FREDERICK EPSTEIN, PHD, whose research specializes in new techniques to diagnose and treat cardiovascular disease, has been promoted to chair the University of Virginia's Department of Biomedical Engineering. Epstein holds a joint appointment as professor of radiology and biomedical engineering at UVA. His research focuses on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to diagnose and treat cardiovascular disease, as well as other conditions such as diabetes and musculoskeletal disorders. The novel MRI methods his lab developed are now used in both clinical and basic medical research. As chair, Epstein plans to focus on strengthening education programs and enhancing the department's research efforts through more outside funding and collaboration with other institutions. He wants to foster the growth of translational research programs, bringing together basic scientists and clinicians and building on UVA's established national reputation in biomedical engineering to develop new tools and treatments that directly benefit patients. DPHS Chair RUTH GAARE BERNHEIM was appointed Chair of the Ethics Subcommittee of the CDC until June 2013. The Ethics Subcommittee was established in 2005 to provide counsel to CDC on a broad range of public health ethics questions and issues arising from programs, scientists and practitioners, and to support CDC in the development of internal capacity to identify, analyze, and resolve ethical issues. The Ethics Subcommittee is composed of 11 academic and professional ethicists from outside CDC. M. ARTHUR GARSON. As the new professor of Public Health Sciences, and director of the Center for Health Policy, Dr. Garson will teach health policy in the medical school curriculum, develop new cross-Grounds initiatives in health policy, and serve as special consultant to the UVA Office of Development. Dr. Garson was previously executive vice president and provost and before that served as vice president and dean of the Medical School. He is a national leader in health care reform efforts, and has served on the White House Panel on Health Policy, and as president of the American College of Cardiology and chair of the AHRQ National Advisory Council.
