136 physicians graduate from UVA School of Medicine

he University of Virginia School of Medicine granted Doctor of Medicine
degrees to the 136 members of the Class of 2011 during graduation exercises on Sun- day, May 22, 2011. The 65 women and 71 men represent the 182nd graduating class of physicians to receive their degrees from UVA. The Class of 2011 had 24 students elected to Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society, and 26 students to the Hu- manism Honor Society. "Many congratulations to the class of 2011," said Steven T. DeKosky, MD, FAAN, FACP, dean and vice president of the School of Medicine. "Today's healthcare landscape is very different from the one many of us
entered. Electronic medical records, techno- logical advances, changes in the way care is reimbursed, and an aging population with a variety of needs all point to a more challeng- ing environment for today's physicians. I am confident, however, that our emphasis on communicating with patients and their fami- lies will enable our physicians to succeed in their profession, and at the same time live a fulfilling and rich life in the service of others." The Class of 2011 will continue their
medical training in medical residencies across 28 states and Washington, DC. The highest number of students, 25, will be train- ing in pediatrics, followed by internal medi- cine with 20 trainees, anesthesiology with 12, emergency medicine with 11, radiology with 10, family practice with 9, and obstet- rics and gynecology with 8. Sixteen of the newly minted physicians will continue their training at the University of Virginia Health System. –Contributed by Sally Jones
