22 GROWING OUR OWN The Leadership in Academic Matters Program
LAM began as a new initiative designed for outstanding mid-career faculty who were recognized experts in their own discipline and who were at the point where they were ready to engage in institutional leadership. Started in 2004, the program was a way of cultivating leaders within the SOM who could go on to become the next department chairs.

COLLABORATION BY DESIGN The Carter-Harrison Research Building
While its plans were still on the drawing board, there was an effort to do things differently in Carter-Harrison. When he made the assignments for the new 102,000-square-foot space that was then known as MR-6, former School of Medicine dean Robert Carey sought to create an interdisciplinary and complementary mix of researchers.
