The 49ers ended the season with an appear- ance in the Atlantic 10 Conference tournament for the second consecutive season. Charlotte started with a win at former con- Charlotte 2010 In Review ference opponent East Carolina and continued to a 12-4 record in non-conference tourna- ment play. The 49ers split a pair of non-conference weeknight matches, a road loss at Duke and a home victory over Elon. Charlotte stumbled out of the gates, drop- ping its first four league matches, before turn- ing things around to win the next three A-10 tilts. The Niners then split the next eight league matches, losing and winning alternate pairs of matches, including wins in the last two matches of the regular season to clinch a spot in the tournament. The 49ers' mid-season struggles could be linked back to the loss of outside hitter Jenna Litoborski to injury. She was missing through Charlotte's 3-5 start in league play, and re- turned to the lineup full time on October 29, adjusting to a defensive specialist role and help- ing the Niners to a 4-2 league finish to grab the sixth seed in the tournament. The Niners nearly upset third-seeded Saint Louis, winning the first and third sets against the Billikens, almost winning the match in a 27- 25 fourth set, before falling 15-8 in the fifth set. In both of the last two tournament appearanc- es, Charlotte took an early set and had chances to advance into the semi-finals, the next goal on the board for the program, according to coaches and players.
