(AP) - Tyrod Taylor hit Marcus Davis with a pair of third-quarter touchdown passes to help No. 16 Virginia Tech beat North Caro- lina 26-10 on Saturday. Taylor threw for 249 yards while the defense locked down the Tar Heels after halftime, helping the Hokies (8-2, 6-0 Atlantic Coast Conference) improve to 4-0 in Chapel Hill since joining the league in 2004. Virginia Tech entered Saturday with a chance to wrap up the ACC’s Coastal Division title for the fourth time in six seasons, but Miami’s easy win at Georgia Tech earlier in the day delayed the Hokies’ corona- tion. Virginia Tech travels to Miami next weekend and needs to win one of its final two games to wrap up a berth in the league championship game in Charlotte on Dec. 4. As for the Tar Heels (6-4, 3-3), their slim chances of winning the division evaporated in a mash of miscues and missed chances. Virginia Tech trailed 10-9 at halftime after kicking three field goals, two when drives stalled after reach- ing the UNC 15 and 8. But Taylor found Davis for a 43-yard gain on the opening drive of the second half, then connected with him again for the go-ahead 11- yard score with 10:38 left in the period. The touchdown capped a dominant third quarter for the Hokies, who outgained the Tar Heels 141-19 while watching their hosts do everything they could to help Virginia Tech inch closer to another division crown. North Carolina committed a season-high six turnovers, with T.J. Yates throwing four interceptions a week after setting a school record with 439 yards passing in the program’s first win at Florida State. CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) - Owen Spencer caught a tipped ball in the end zone for a touchdown on fourth down and T.J. Graham returned a punt 87 yards for another score to help North Carolina State rally past rival North Carolina 29-25 on Saturday. Russell Wilson threw two touchdown passes for the Wolfpack (8-3, 5-2 Atlantic Coast Conference), including the improbable 2-yard score to Spencer late in the third quarter. With the win, N.C. State put itself in position to claim the league’s Atlantic Division title and earn a spot in the ACC championship game by winning next weekend at Maryland. The win also improved Tom O’Brien’s Wolfpack to 4-0 against Butch Davis’ Tar Heels (6-5, 3-4) since the coaches took over their programs before the 2007 season. First, the Tar Heels put together a goal-line stand to force a fourth down, but O’Brien passed on a short field goal to make it a one-possession game and went for the touchdown. It appeared to be a mistake when Wilson found himself scrambling around under pres- sure and lofting a desperate pass into a crowd in the right corner of the end zone. Safety Da’Norris Searcy and receiver Darrell Davis appeared to tip the ball, which landed in Spencer’s arms as he fell to the turf. Officials signaled for a touchdown, a call which stood after a replay review. That lead ultimately held, though T.J. Yates did everything he could to keep the Tar Heels in it. He di- rected a touchdown drive with about a minute left, but his desperate heave into traffic for the tying 2-point conversion--in the same area where Spencer came up with the TD catch--fell incomplete. CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) - T.J. Yates threw for 264 yards and a touchdown, and North Carolina continued its dominance of Duke by holding off the Blue Devils 24-19 on Saturday. Anthony Elzy rushed for a career-high 116 yards, and he and Shaun Draughn each had short scoring runs for the Tar Heels (7-5, 4-4 Atlantic Coast Confer- ence), who led 24-10 late before Duke (3-9, 1-7) made things interesting in the final 5 minutes. They stuffed Draughn in the end zone for a safety, pulled within five on Brandon Connette’s 2-yard touch- down run with 3:20 left, and forced a punt to get the ball back with 43 seconds left at the Duke 24. But they couldn’t come up with a miracle finish. Austin Kelly caught Sean Renfree’s last pass near midfield, but he was wrapped up as time expired before he could find someone to take a lateral. That sealed North Carolina’s 20th win in 21 meetings with Duke. Renfree was 24 of 39 for 242 yards with two interceptions and a 9-yard touchdown pass to Kelly for Duke, which ended its season with a three-game losing streak. Yates was 28 of 35, reached the 9,000-yard passing mark for his career and threw a 5-yard touchdown pass to Joshua Adams for the Tar Heels, who had four scoring drives of at least 80 yards and converted 65 percent of their third downs. They snapped a two- game losing streak and locked up their third straight winning season. Elzy scored on a 5-yard run and surpassed the pre- vious high of 95 yards he set three years ago against Miami. He helped North Carolina keep hold of the Victory Bell traveling trophy that goes to the winner of this game.
