Campbell Stadium • Tallahasse, Fla. MIAMI (AP) - Sean Spence and Brandon Har- ris danced toward the sideline in such exaggerated celebration that they drew a penalty. Randy Shannon chest-bumped 310-pound left tackle Orlando Franklin. Allen Bailey shook his fist and screamed at no one in particular. Jacory Harris threw three touchdown passes to move into second place on Miami’s career list, Damien Berry ran for his fourth straight game of 100-plus yards and the 25th-ranked Hurricanes scored the game’s last 30 points to easily beat North Carolina 33-10 on Saturday night. “They challenged each other to step up and make plays,” said Shannon, the Miami coach who beat North Carolina for the first time in four tries. “I think that’s one thing about this football team--guys are starting to develop a mentality of what we’re trying to get done. The great teams and the great players step up and challenge each player.” Berry finished with 109 yards and a touchdown for the Hurricanes (5-2, 3-1 Atlantic Coast Conference). LaRon Byrd, Travis Benjamin and Leonard Hankerson had touchdown catches for Miami and Spence forced a key fumble in the opening quarter to deny North Carolina a touchdown. Johnny White had a 76-yard touchdown run for North Carolina (4-3, 2-2), the longest carry for the Tar Heels in more than nine years. White’s score gave North Carolina a 10-3 lead in the second quarter, before Miami took over and denied the Tar Heels’ bid for their first five-game winning streak since 2001. Jacory Harris completed 21 of 32 passes for 217 yards for Miami. T.J. Yates was 12 of 21 for 140 yards and two interceptions for North Carolina, which got 85 yards from White and 71 more from Shaun Draughn. Miami sacked Yates five times, a season-worst for North Carolina - with Bailey getting credited for 3 1/2 of them. “The formula when you play against Miami is you don’t want to play from behind,” Davis said. “They’ve got some great defensive linemen who can put pres- sure on your quarterback.” Carolina Miami 3 0 7 13 0 13 0 7 - - 10 33 UNC - Barth 19 yd field goal (5:15, 1st) MIA - Bosher 38 yd field goal (14:16, 2nd) UNC - White 76 yd run (Barth kick) (13:51, 2nd) MIA - Bosher 34 yd field goal (10:23, 2nd) MIA - Byrd 6 yd pass from Harris (Bosher kick) (3:09, 2nd) MIA - Benjamin 24 yd pass from Harris (10:01, 3rd) MIA - Hankerson 19 yd pass from Harris (Bosher kick) (2:06, 3rd) MIA - Berry 2 yd run (Bosher kick) (9:04, 4th) UNC First Downs Rushes-Yards Passing Yards Comp-Att-Int Plays-Total Yards (Avg) Punts (Avg) Fumbles-Lost Penalties-Yards Time of Possession Individual Rushing Leaders Carolina - White 8-85-1, Draughn 10-74-0 Miami - Berry 19-109-1 Individual Passing Leaders (Comp-Att-Yds-TD-Int) Carolina - Yates 12-21-140-0-2 Miami - Harris 21-32-217-3-1 Individual Receiving Leaders Carolina - Jones 4-74, White 2-27 Miami - Benjamin 4-67-1, Hankerson 4-51-1 10 29-149 140 12-21-2 50-289-5.8 4-41.0 2-1 5-47 25:54 MIA 26 44-225 217 21-32-1 76-442-5.8 3-35.3 1-0 6-51 35:06 Individual Rushing Leaders Carolina - White 29-164-1 William & Mary - Marriner - 13-34-0 Individual Passing Leaders (Comp-Att-Yds-TD-Int) Carolina - Yates 23-33-238-1-1 William & Mary - Paulus 24-35-209-2-0 Individual Receiving Leaders Carolina - Jones 9-107, Taylor 3-19-1 William & Mary - Hill 6-59-2, Mangas 7-53 Individual Rushing Leaders Carolina - White 7-7-1, Furr 3-27 Florida State - Pryor 4-16-2, Thompson 9-49 Individual Passing Leaders (Comp-Att-Yds-TD-Int) Carolina - Yates 24-35-439-3-0 Florida State - 24-34-264-3-0 Individual Receiving Leaders Carolina - Jones 8-233-1, Joshua Adams 5-91-1 Florida State - Haulstead 10-154-1, Easterling 6-33-1 TarHeelBlue.com • 101 Carolina William & Mary 0 6 7 11 0 0 14 0 - - 21 17 W & M - Hill 6 yd pass from Paulus (Kuhn kick failed) (4:37, 1st) UNC - Yates 1 yd run (Barth kick) (5:34, 2nd) W & M - Hill 9 yd pass from Paulus (2 pt conversion good) (0:23, 2nd) W & M - Kuhn 28 yd field goal (0:00, 2nd) UNC - Taylor 3 yd pass from Yates (Barth kick) (8:32, 4th) UNC - White 67 yd run (Barth kick) (5:27, 4th) First Downs Rushes-Yards Passing Yards Comp-Att-Int Plays-Total Yards (Avg) Punts (Avg) Fumbles-Lost Penalties-Yards Time of Possession UNC 19 37-183 238 23-33-1 8-86 32:26 W & M 20 26-51 235 70-421-6.0 66-286-4.3 3-38.0 1-1 26-40-1 5-42.2 6-27 1-0 27:34 CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) - Johnny White’s 67-yard touchdown run with 5:27 to play capped North Caro- lina’s rally from 10 points down in the fourth quarter and lifted the Tar Heels past William & Mary 21-17 on Saturday. White finished with a career-high 164 yards for North Carolina (5-3), which snapped the Tribe’s six-game winning streak. After a lethargic first three quarters against a Football Championship Subdivision opponent, the Tar Heels finally got rolling in time to avoid being upset by a former teammate. T.J. Yates was 23 of 33 for 238 yards with a 1-yard touchdown run and a 3-yard TD pass to Ryan Taylor. Mike Paulus--Yates’ former backup at North Caroli- na--nearly led William & Mary to another win against one of the Atlantic Coast Conference’s big boys. He finished 24 of 35 for 209 yards and touchdowns of 6 and 9 yards to Chase Hill for the Tribe (6-2). The Tar Heels trailed 17-7 after three quarters be- fore finally putting together their most impressive drive of the day. They converted two fourth downs during an 18-play, 90-yard march that Yates capped with his short touchdown pass to Taylor to pull them to 17-14 with 8:32 left. White--who had a 76-yard scoring run in last week’s loss at Miami--struck from long distance again. He took a third-down handoff through the left side, stiff-armed safety Terrell Wells and cut back to the right on his way to the end zone. Though these schools were playing for just the sec- ond time in roughly two decades, there was plenty of familiarity on the sidelines. North Carolina offensive coordinator John Shoop is the younger brother of Tribe defensive coordinator Bob Shoop. Paulus was one of the key members of North Caroli- na coach Butch Davis’ first recruiting class in 2007. He wound up playing in only four games, didn’t attempt a pass in 2009 and transferred to William & Mary following last season in search of more playing time. TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) - T.J Yates’ record-setting performance delivered North Carolina a victory in a place it had never won before. Yates threw for a school-record 439 yards, Casey Barth kicked his third goal, a 22-yarder, with 55 seconds left and the Tar Heels beat No. 24 Florida State 37-35 for their first victory in nine games in Tallahassee. Florida State kicker Dustin Hopkins missed two field goals in the fourth quarter, including a 40-yard try with 7 seconds left. Yates threw three touchdown passes and took the Tar Heels 72 yards on the winning drive to set up Barth’s decisive kick. Yates’ 31-yard completion to Dwight Jones was the big play in a drive that North Carolina coach Butch Davis called the best one in his four years at the school. “Tonight was kind of somewhat to be honest with you a microcosm of the whole season,” North Carolina Davis said. “It seems like every week there’s drama and adversity, challenges.” In a season in which the Tar Heels (6-3, 3-2) were expected to contend for the ACC championship they have dealt the loss of several star players because of a pair of NCAA investigations. Still, they have salvaged the season by becoming bowl eligible and beating Florida State for only the second time in 18 meetings. The Seminoles (6-3, 4-2 Atlantic Coast Conference) lost control of their own destiny in the league race after a 28-24 defeat at North Carolina State on Oct. 18, when Ponder fumbled the ball inside the Wolfpack 5 in the waning seconds of the game. Instead, the division will be a scramble to the finish- -much like this game. But the Seminoles couldn’t get their offense restarted in the second half for a third straight week.
